If
you’re still on the fence about participating in our inaugural Bikes & Beers ride at
the brewery on Saturday, June 9, you’d better act fast
because tickets are almost sold out! Here’s the deal: Beginning at 9:30 a.m.,
you’ll embark on your choice of either a 15- or 30-mile ride, both starting and
ending at Tröegs. Afterward, you’ll get a beer (if you’re 21+), a pint glass, a
koozie, and a $5 Tröegs gift card, as well as a free raffle ticket for a chance
to win a brand-new bike, restaurant gift certificates, and some sweet cycling

Mother’s Day, Farm Update, We’re Hiring, Hop Head
Alert, & More!

We can feel the tease of summer in the air, and, with
it, lots of fun events coming up in our beer garden! That
makes us want to staff up – so we are seeking line cooks and dishwashers for our
newly expanded kitchen, plus experienced bartenders up front. More on that
below. But we’re not the only ones excited about the warmer weather.
The animals here (farm animals and employees!) are enjoying the
sunshine, too, as we welcome the newest additions to our growing farm!

Mother’s Day: May 13th,
12pm-7pm

We’ll be open regular hours
this Sunday so you can treat your ‘farm-fresh food loving’ and/or ‘craft
beer-loving’ mom to some delicious food and drink! We’ll be offering
our full, regular menu that day, plus a few celebratory food and
drink specials (think mimosas and shandies!) for the special ladies in
your life. Want to learn more? Check out the details on
our blog!

We’ll also be hosting our weekly
yoga session
this Sunday at 11am. It’s just $5/person to join –
could be the perfect outing for mom!

ShakesBEERience: June 3rd,
12pm-6pm

One afternoon. Four plays.
Many ShakesBEERs. Seven Stages Shakespeare Company’s wildly-popular
ShakesBEERience play reading program heads back here for their fifth annual
encore performance!

Professional actors- with script in one hand, beer in the other- will take you
on the journey with the Twelfth
Night,
The
Merchant of Venice, T
he
Tempest, and
Much
Ado About Nothing!

Come for the whole afternoon, or come for one play– the experience you have is
yours to create. Reserved tickets are required and will be available by early
next week at 7StagesShakespeare.org.

What’s New on the Farm: Crops
& Cute Animals Update

There’s
lots going on here at Hobbs Farm these days
! We’ve expanded our
menagerie of animals, welcoming five adorable heirloom piglets into
our midst: Chaga, Oyster, Truffle, Chanterelle, and Pork-cini. We added two new
goslings, Charlie Ryan Gosling and Little Ryan Gosling, plus a whole flock
of ducklings! We’ve already farmed out over two acres, added
irrigation, and more! Check out more details on latest farm progress here.

By the way, Seacoast Eat Local’s weekly farm markets are open for
the season, too – you can find us every Thursday in Exeter from 2:15-6pm in
Swasey Park and Saturdays in Portsmouth from 8am-1pm. We bring filled growlettes
you can swap out for your empty ones, and also plenty of cans for sale, plus our
very own Hobbs Farm Beer Mustard and Blueberry Apple Jam!

Join our Team!
Warm weather means new hires!
We are looking for full and part time dishwashers, line cooks,
and experienced bartenders to join our team. If you can hustle, are extremely friendly,
and take pride in doing an excellent job, you could be a great fit here! No
phone calls, please. If you are interested in applying please send your
resume to info@throwbackbrewery.com.

Cheers!

Hop Head
Alert

Here’s some news that should make our hop-loving
friends happy! Coming back on tap by the end of next week are two of our most
popular hoppy beers: Cashmere Track Suit
(8.4% ABV New England Style Double IPA) andHoppy Oat Lucky
(5.7% ABV Hoppy Oat IPA). In our tasting of both of these beers, we think
these batches are the best yet!

In
addition, given how much fun we had making all of the experimental IPAs for our
Hoppin’ Summer Series I and II, and,
given how much you guys seemed to love the beers, we are doing it again! You can
look forward to Hoppin’ Summer Series III, which will start off with us
releasing a New England Style Donkey (Hote) in June. In July, you can look
forward to a beer we are calling  777 – a  7% ABV hoppy beer to
celebrate our 7th birthday, which will also feature 7 different hops and 7
different malts. The final two beers in the series are being worked on, but we
can tell you that the August beer will be tart & tasty (think on the sour
spectrum), and the September beer will be a bright and lemony IPA to celebrate
the end of Summer.

Not a fan of hops? Don’t worry – we have plenty of fun beer for you in the
works, including a berliner weisse coming out in the next two weeks, which we
plan to serve here at the pub with your choice of a few different syrups!

Santo De
Mayo Pub Crawl in Montrose
Saturday, May 5 | 2:00 – 6:00
PM

Each year, we celebrate
Santo De Mayo with a Pub Crawl on the Saturday closest to May 5. This year, the
Saturday closest to May 5 is May 5 itself! We love when things work out that
way. We’re heading back to Montrose for this one, and like we’ve done a few
times in the past for our larger Pub Crawls, the day will feature two
routes.

Everyone will start at Rudyard’s, where you’ll
receive your punch card and learn your route. Obviously, we’ll do our best to
not split your group of friends in half. Both routes will end at the same place
– La Grange.

As always, our Pub Crawls are free to attend.
Complete your route, and you’ll earn a fabulous prize – a commemorative Santo De
Mayo pint glass! We will have a large but limited supply. Designated drivers are
always encouraged to participate and eligible for the award! Here’s the
layout:

Start at 2:00
PM:

Rudyard’s

Your route will include some (but not all)
of the following:

Hay Merchant | The Burger
Joint
| Pistolero’s |
Poison Girl | El Real

Final Stop at 6:00 PM:

Grange

31st Annual
Houston Art Car Parade
Saturday, April 14

Every year, we love being a
part of the Houston Art Car Parade. This year marks the 31st running of the
Houston tradition and the 18th year we’ve participated. Thus, we figured we’d go
big.

We are proud to now be the Official Beer of the Houston Art Car
Parade! If there’s a better time to enjoy an Art Car IPA, we can’t think of it.
As you watch the motorized madness roll by, be on the lookout for our
handpainted Saint Arnold Art Cars. We will have five of them in the parade this
time around – the most we’ve ever had.

With a move back to Allen
Parkway – while still incorporating Smith and Bagby streets in Downtown – this year’s route will be one of the longest in
recent memory. The parade starts at 2:00 PM, but we suggest getting there early
to see the cars up close and chat with the artists. The Starting Line Party
begins at 11:00 AM. You can also support the Art Car Parade by getting tickets
to the VIPit Party where you’ll enjoy food and beer starting at
noon.

Dear Saint Arnold Army,

Hurry, hurry! Step right up! A brand new beer is
here!

Our Newest Year Round
Beer: Orange Show

The newest addition to our year
round lineup, Orange Show, is a blonde ale made with real blood oranges. It is
named after the famed folk art monument in Houston’s East End neighborhood, and
it’s popping up in all of the normal spots around town
now.

Each batch of Orange Show uses 2,200 lb of real blood
orange purée, added during fermation. That’s about 1/2 lb per gallon. This
– along with the Centennial and Citra hops – gives the beer a strong citrus
aroma. The combination of sweet, bitter and slightly tart flavors make it a
balanced, light bodied beer.

The beer’s name comes
from the Orange Show Monument, a 3,000 square-foot structure designed by the
late Jefferson Davis McKissack, a Houston postal worker. He built it as a
tribute to his favorite fruit, and it is viewed as one of the most important
folk art environments in the country.

For decades, we’ve had a
partnership with the Orange Show Center for Visionary Art. Our Art Car IPA – and
the art cars our salespeople drive – were inspired by their Art Car Parade. We
thought paying homage to the Orange Show Monument with our newest beer was a fun
way to grow the relationship and support their mission. To that end, a portion
of the proceeds from this beer will be donated to the Orange Show Center for
Visionary Art to promote arts education in Houston.

Enjoy the
Show!

St.
Patrick’s Day Party at Saint Arnold
This Saturday, March
17

We’re going all out this year
for our annual celebration of our two favorite saints. Our all day party will
feature live music, beer games, special stout beers, commemorative glassware,
food trucks and our annual Donegal Beard Growing Competition. Admission is free,
free, free!

We’ll have a stage in our front parking lot featuring live
music from Dead Rabbits, Tomfooligans, The Real McCoys, and Murder the Stout.
Throughout the day, we’ll be releasing special stout beers. Food will be
available from food trucks Happy Endings, Sticky’s Chicken, and Oh My Gogi. Our
regular beer lineup and commemorative St. Patrick’s Day glassware will also be
available.

In addition, we’ll be hosting
the return of the World Elevated Beer Pouring Championship. That means you and a
friend could pour beer from a scissor lift into a bucket on the other person’s
head. Email josh_nelson@saintarnold.com to enter the
competition.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a
Saint Arnold St. Patrick’s Day Party without our Donegal Beard Growing
Competition. Dozens of brave beard growers are busy sprouting facial hair right
this very moment, and on St. Patrick’s Day, they will compete for the crown.
This year, the winning beard will earn its owner a membership to the Saint
Arnold Society.

Admission to our St.
Patrick’s Day Party is FREE!

Our Newest Icon Green
– Cryo IPA

The original concept of our
Icon series was to brew beers iconic of a particular style. Over the years, that
has morphed a bit – many of the releases have been creative interpretations of
classic styles. When we get our hands on a new ingredient or learn of an
innovative technique, we love to incorporate those into our Icon series as well.
With our newest Icon beer, we turn to a new technology.

Our Icon Green –
Cryo IPA utilizes a new method of processing hops known as lupulin powder or
Cryo technology. Dry hopped with Ekuanot, Citra, and Mosaic hops, the result is
an IPA with bursts of citrus and melon aroma, upfront bitterness, a medium body
and balanced finish.

Icon Green – Cryo IPA comes in at 6.0% ABV and 69
IBU. It’s popping up in the market this week. Enjoy it while it
lasts!

Girls Pint Out
at Saint Arnold
Wednesday, March
21 – 6:00 – 9:00 PM

Girls Pint Out is back! Ladies,
join us on Wednesday, March 21 for an evening of fun and special beer. Our
awesome female staff members will be here to hang out, give behind-the-scenes
tours and more! We’ll have eats from the kitchen available for purchase, and as
a bonus, we’ll be tapping two special beers brewed just for this
evening.

Tickets are $25 and include
your beer for the evening, plus a commemorative pint glass. $5 from each ticket
will go to the Houston Area Women’s Center, which helps individuals affected by
domestic and sexual violence in their efforts to move their lives
forward.

3rd Annual Pup
Crawl at Houston Arboretum & Nature Center
Sunday,
March 25 – 4:00 – 7:00 PM

At Saint Arnold, we are
passionate about animal rescue. For each case of Ale Wagger sold, we donate $1
to local rescue organizations. Here in Houston, that’s our friends at BARC. We
have hosted two Pup Crawls (pun intended) to gather the folks who drink Ale
Wagger (you), and the ones the beer benefits (your pets). It’s a fun way to
present our big check to BARC and enjoy a few beers at the beautiful Houston
Arboretum & Nature Center.
On Sunday, March 25, we will be
hosting our 3rd Annual Pup Crawl. Obviously, you can bring man’s best friend.
Aside from that, things are a bit different from our people Pub Crawls. Here’s
how it will work:

You’ll purchase a ticket in
advance. Of each $25 ticket, half of the proceeds will go to the Houston
Arboretum and the other half will benefit our local Ale Wagger partner BARC. On
the day of the Pup Crawl, come out to the Arboretum, and we’ll give you a punch
card. From there, there will be four stops to visit along the nature trail, and
you can crawl to them in any order you choose. Children can attend, under 21 do
not require a ticket.

Along the way, there will be
plenty of beer for you, as well as water and other goodies for your pup. When
you arrive at the last stop, you’ll redeem your punch card for an Ale Wagger
pint glass, hang out and enjoy a beer in the great outdoors. Food trucks will be
on site, along with a bunch of local vendors for a Pet Expo. BARC will be there
with dogs available for adoption, so you could leave with more dogs than you
started with!

There will be off-site parking
available near the Houston Arboretum.

You are welcome to bring
multiple dogs. All dogs do need to be on a leash during their time inside the
grounds of Memorial Park and the Arboretum. Lawn chairs are welcome as well, as
seating will be limited on the trail and at the final stop. This is a rain or
shine event. Prepare accordingly – you will be walking through an urban
forest!

Crawl

Art of Tröegs Contest

It’s your turn to get in on the art! Our annual Art of Tröegs Contest has been happening for more than a decade now, and each year, it gets bigger and better. The challenge is simple: Create a piece of art inspired by Tröegs. It can be flat. It can be 3-dimensional. It can be a sculpture or a song. It can be anything you dream up, as long as it has a Tröegs twist. The winner will get $500 and be the star of the Art of Tröegs Gallery above the Splinter Cellar of our Hershey brewery!

Learn more at troegs.com/art.

Tröegs nomimated for Best Brewery Tour

According to USA Today, our Guided Brewery Tour is one of the best in the country! Help Tröegs claim the honor of “Best Brewery Tour” in the U.S. by voting every day through March 19.

VOTE NOW!

Farmette at a glance:

ABV – 6.5%
Oak – French, Hungarian
Yeast – French Saison
Fermentation – Brett, Lacto

We taste: tart citrus rind, spring rain, subtle clove

New Splinter Beer Release!

Some call them trophies or grails or white whales. We call them Splinter beers.

Available now! Farmette joins our family of wood-aged beers as part of our Splinter Series beers.

A spell on oak with our house culture – a wayward mix of microflora we’ve been cultivating since our very first foray into wild fermentation – transformed this saison into something altogether unexpected. The wood tempers the traditional notes of clove and pepper, making way for layers of woodsy earthiness and lemon tang.

Farmette is available in 12.7oz. cork & cage bottles exclusively at the brewery in our General Store (take-out) and Tasting Room (on-premise consumption).

Splinter on the horizon

Coming March 22Blackberry Tizzy
One day, we muddled some fresh blackberries with brown sugar, lemon juice and bourbon. “Mmm,” we thought. “This should be a beer.” Blackberry Tizzy is that spirited daydream come true. Sour fermentation tempers the juicy blackberries with a touch of tartness, and a spell in bourbon barrels delivers ripples of oak and toasted coconut.
Blackberry Tizzy will be available in 12.7oz. cork & cage bottles exclusively at the brewery in our General Store (take-out) and Tasting Room (on-premise consumption).

Scratch Beer Roundup

We’ve got lots going on with our Scratch Series this month! Scratch #320 is our latest effort to bring body to a lower-alcohol IPA without compromising aroma or flavor. With a winning combination of Azacca, Centennial, Chinook, and Comet hops, we upped the amount of unfermentable sugars even more for additional silkiness and smooth texture.
ABV: 5.2%
IBU: 40
We taste: juicy pineapple, grapefruit, hints of pine
Availability: draft & growler fills only

The impetus of Scratch #319 comes from one of our brewer’s homebrew recipes for a traditional German-style Festbier, or “Märzen” (German for “March”) lager. Brewed using a conventional technique of boiling the mash to introduce robust caramel flavors, our take on this timeless style is full-bodied and rich with plenty of toasty and sweet malty goodness you’d expect to find in a Fest lager.
ABV: 6.3%
IBU: 19
We taste: caramel, toasted bread, dried stone fruit
Availability: draft & growler fills only

Walking the fields during hop harvest, we were captivated by an intensely citrusy row called “Lemondrop.” Scratch #318 continues our focus on this lively hop boasting notes of lemon rind. For this version, we dropped the Caliente hops to allow tried-and-true Centennial to deliver some good old-fashioned citrus and intensify the lemon character. This is the latest of a few Double IPAs we plan to brew with Lemondrop to see how different malts and hops bring out its subtleties.
ABV: 9.9%
IBU: 52
We taste: juicy lemon, green tea, ripe melon
Availability: draft & growler fills only

For Scratch #316, our latest take on a boysenberry gose, we upped the fruit character and tartness with more boysenberries — a cross between a blackberry and a raspberry. The blackberry notes add a deep red grape-like juiciness, while the raspberry character adds a sweet-and-tangy pop. A hint of salt adds texture and helps pull through the berry goodness.
ABV: 4.5%
IBU: 7
We taste: sweet-tart jam, wildflowers, citrus
Availability: draft & growler fills only

Not too long ago, we got a taste of some two-row barley grown about a half hour away in Mount Joy. It wasn’t just local, it was amazing, and we hatched a plan to brew a PA-centric take on our cult classic Troegenator. The combination of Double Eagle’s barley and caramel rye gives “PA Nator” a deep, port-like maltiness and chewy body, and Cascade hops from Sunny Brae in Carlisle add subtle pine notes.
ABV: 8.2%
IBU: 31
We taste: rye bread, raisin, caramel
Availability: draft & growler fills only

Scratch #311 celebrates “Metal Brewer,” our Tröegs co-worker homebrew competition. Last year’s winning recipe, a Sangria-inspired IPA highlighting the Amarillo hop, wowed judges and attendees alike with its mélange of fresh fruit, maraschino cherries soaked in spiced rum, and toasted oak spirals saturated with Carménère, a dry red Chilean wine. Heavy-handed hopping with Amarillo provides an explosive grapefruit conclusion to this refreshing, fruity IPA.
ABV: 5.5%
IBU: 84
We taste: citrus zest, fruit cocktail, vanilla, hint of spiced rum
Availability: draft & growler fills only

St
Paddy’s Day, Maple Madness, The Learned Pint, CSA, & More!

St. Patrick’s Day Events, 3rd Annual Maple
Madness, The Learned Pint Speaker Series, & More!

March brings lots of exciting events to the brewery –
some annual traditions and some new! We’ll be kicking off a speaker
series titled The Learned Pint, where we’ll be bringing in three
experts on three different dates to share their expertise on nurturing our
environment and our spirits this spring. The end of the month brings maple
sugaring and all its sweet goodness, including our third annual Maple
Madness
event with local sugar house Syrup by the Sea on the
Sunday of NH Maple Weekend. And, next week, we’re sure to all be just a little
Irish as we welcome St. Patrick’s Day with a pre-party featuring an authentic
Irish music session on Thursday and a culinary celebration on the 17th with a
special beer flight, Irish menu specials, and more.

Thursday, March 15th, 11am-9pm: Pre-St
Patrick’s Party

Get a jump (or a jig, or a reel) on your St Patrick’s
Day plans at our Pre-St Patrick’s Day Party,
when we’ll be unveiling our very first Irish
Red Ale
– a mild classic Irish Red crafted with balance in
mind – a touch of roasted malts to give it a gorgeous reddish rust color and a
light caramel sweetness. Just enough Mt. Hood and Willamette hops to add some
light citrus and tea notes. And a balanced body to make it appropriate to
pair with meaty Irish stews and pies, yet still remain highly drinkable and
refreshing.

From 6:30-8:30pm, we’ll host an authentic Irish
session with Penhallow.
A traditional celtic band centered in Portsmouth,  Penhallow consists
of veteran session players who frequent the many Irish sessions around the
seacoast and beyond.

And it wouldn’t be a celebration of all things Irish
without the food! Look for traditional Irish menu specials, such as a reuben,
lamb stew made with our delicious Stout Stout, and of course our Shepherd’s Pie!
This event is free and for all ages.

Saturday, March
17th,
11am-9pm:
Celebrate
St. Patrick’s Day!

We’ll have Irish Menu specials all day including
a traditional
boiled dinner
with house-made corned beef made from
Northeast Family Farms brisket, plus a Luck
o’ the Irish Sampler Tray!
This limited edition beer
flight includes 4-ounce pours of our new Irish Red Ale, Irish Red
with Wine Blossom Cask, Stout Stout, and 5-Minute Fugitive Russian
Imperial Stout. Come on out and toast to old Eire. Slainte!

Wednesday, March 21st, 6pm: The Learned Pint
Speaker Series

March kicks off a new educational speaker series here
at Throwback Brewery that we’ve titled The
Learned
 Pint.
This series will feature a trio of topics we wanted to learn more about, so we
thought you might be interested, too!

Sessions will kick off at 6:30pm on three Wednesdays
this spring. All are welcome and there is no cost, we just ask that you RSVP through our Eventbrite page so we know how many of you
to expect. Want to learn more? Check out our
blog!

Wednesday,
March 21st – Let’s Talk Fish
with Gabriella Bradt, PhD, UNH.
This session will take a look at what’s happening in today’s New Hampshire
fisheries and the future of this historic industry. As a farm to table
restaurant with a passion for supporting local industries, we feel that
sustainable practices and support of our native fishermen and women is vital to
their survival. Gabby is passionate about speaking about local seafood and
the state of our local fisheries and what we – as NH residents – can/should
do to keep our fishing heritage alive and our fish in our local seafood
markets.

Sunday, March 25th, 12-4pm: 3rd Annual Maple
Madness!

Join us for a
fun-for-the-entire-family celebration of all things maple, right here on the
Seacoast! We’ll have tasty maple beers and from-scratch food made with real NH
maple syrup, live music, a magician for the kids, sap-to-syrup demos
from Syrup
by the Sea
, a farm tour, and more! This event is free, and takes place both
indoors and out, so please dress warmly.

Here’s
the schedule:

12-4pm:
Chris Olsen from Syrup by the Sea will demonstrate the
real-time process of turning sap into syrup and have maple syrup for sample and
for sale.

12:30-1:30pm:
Magician Jay Fraser will be strolling around, entertaining the
kids.

1-4pm:
Live Music by the George
Brown Music
Duo, whose musical influence spans a range of styles from
Americana to funk, on our outdoor stage.

2pm:
Farm Tour with a visit to our Nigerian Dwarf goats & miniature
donkeys.

We’ll have beer on tap both inside and out in our beer garden.
Come on out and try our popular Maple
Kissed Wheat Porter
, plus three limited edition maple brews: Bananas
Foster Maple Hefeweizen, Maple Bourbon Hopstruck Cask,
and Maple
Blueberry Stout
! We’ll also have Maple Sausage Breakfast Sammies
and Maple Crullers available at outdoor food stations from 12-4pm,
plus maple menu specials all day from 12-7pm including Sugar on Snow
and Maple Braised Carnitas Tacos. For more details on the day go here.

We hope you’ll join us in celebrating Maple Weekend and one of New
Hampshire’s most time-honored products and processes, plus all of our other
March events!

Cheers!
–Annette & Nicole

New
Beers:

This month we introduce two new beers to our collection.

Farm to
Trail Ale
, a Roggenbier (Rye Ale). This beer is a
collaboration to end all collaborations; the malt came from Valley Malt,
the recipe from Beerology Homebrew, and a portion of the proceeds will
benefit Kestrel Land Trust. Without farms there would be no
beer.

Irish Farewell, is here just in time for St. Patty’s Day. As our
newest seasonal ale, this Irish Red is a crystal clear red hue’d beer that has a
clean and crisp taste with just a touch of malty sweetness.

Both beers area available in 4 packs and on tap at
the Brewery!
