Saint Arnold Newsletter

Dear Saint Arnold Army,

Hurry, hurry! Step right up! A brand new beer is
here!

Our Newest Year Round
Beer: Orange Show

The newest addition to our year
round lineup, Orange Show, is a blonde ale made with real blood oranges. It is
named after the famed folk art monument in Houston’s East End neighborhood, and
it’s popping up in all of the normal spots around town
now.

Each batch of Orange Show uses 2,200 lb of real blood
orange purée, added during fermation. That’s about 1/2 lb per gallon. This
– along with the Centennial and Citra hops – gives the beer a strong citrus
aroma. The combination of sweet, bitter and slightly tart flavors make it a
balanced, light bodied beer.

The beer’s name comes
from the Orange Show Monument, a 3,000 square-foot structure designed by the
late Jefferson Davis McKissack, a Houston postal worker. He built it as a
tribute to his favorite fruit, and it is viewed as one of the most important
folk art environments in the country.

For decades, we’ve had a
partnership with the Orange Show Center for Visionary Art. Our Art Car IPA – and
the art cars our salespeople drive – were inspired by their Art Car Parade. We
thought paying homage to the Orange Show Monument with our newest beer was a fun
way to grow the relationship and support their mission. To that end, a portion
of the proceeds from this beer will be donated to the Orange Show Center for
Visionary Art to promote arts education in Houston.

Enjoy the
Show!

St.
Patrick’s Day Party at Saint Arnold
This Saturday, March
17

We’re going all out this year
for our annual celebration of our two favorite saints. Our all day party will
feature live music, beer games, special stout beers, commemorative glassware,
food trucks and our annual Donegal Beard Growing Competition. Admission is free,
free, free!

We’ll have a stage in our front parking lot featuring live
music from Dead Rabbits, Tomfooligans, The Real McCoys, and Murder the Stout.
Throughout the day, we’ll be releasing special stout beers. Food will be
available from food trucks Happy Endings, Sticky’s Chicken, and Oh My Gogi. Our
regular beer lineup and commemorative St. Patrick’s Day glassware will also be
available.

In addition, we’ll be hosting
the return of the World Elevated Beer Pouring Championship. That means you and a
friend could pour beer from a scissor lift into a bucket on the other person’s
head. Email josh_nelson@saintarnold.com to enter the
competition.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a
Saint Arnold St. Patrick’s Day Party without our Donegal Beard Growing
Competition. Dozens of brave beard growers are busy sprouting facial hair right
this very moment, and on St. Patrick’s Day, they will compete for the crown.
This year, the winning beard will earn its owner a membership to the Saint
Arnold Society.

Admission to our St.
Patrick’s Day Party is FREE!

Our Newest Icon Green
– Cryo IPA

The original concept of our
Icon series was to brew beers iconic of a particular style. Over the years, that
has morphed a bit – many of the releases have been creative interpretations of
classic styles. When we get our hands on a new ingredient or learn of an
innovative technique, we love to incorporate those into our Icon series as well.
With our newest Icon beer, we turn to a new technology.

Our Icon Green –
Cryo IPA utilizes a new method of processing hops known as lupulin powder or
Cryo technology. Dry hopped with Ekuanot, Citra, and Mosaic hops, the result is
an IPA with bursts of citrus and melon aroma, upfront bitterness, a medium body
and balanced finish.

Icon Green – Cryo IPA comes in at 6.0% ABV and 69
IBU. It’s popping up in the market this week. Enjoy it while it
lasts!

Girls Pint Out

21 – 6:00 – 9:00 PM

Girls Pint Out is back! Ladies,
join us on Wednesday, March 21 for an evening of fun and special beer. Our
awesome female staff members will be here to hang out, give behind-the-scenes
tours and more! We’ll have eats from the kitchen available for purchase, and as
a bonus, we’ll be tapping two special beers brewed just for this
evening.

Tickets are $25 and include
your beer for the evening, plus a commemorative pint glass. $5 from each ticket
will go to the Houston Area Women’s Center, which helps individuals affected by
domestic and sexual violence in their efforts to move their lives
forward.

3rd Annual Pup
Crawl at Houston Arboretum & Nature Center
Sunday,
March 25 – 4:00 – 7:00 PM

At Saint Arnold, we are
passionate about animal rescue. For each case of Ale Wagger sold, we donate $1
to local rescue organizations. Here in Houston, that’s our friends at BARC. We
have hosted two Pup Crawls (pun intended) to gather the folks who drink Ale
Wagger (you), and the ones the beer benefits (your pets). It’s a fun way to
present our big check to BARC and enjoy a few beers at the beautiful Houston
Arboretum & Nature Center.
On Sunday, March 25, we will be
hosting our 3rd Annual Pup Crawl. Obviously, you can bring man’s best friend.
Aside from that, things are a bit different from our people Pub Crawls. Here’s
how it will work:

You’ll purchase a ticket in
advance. Of each $25 ticket, half of the proceeds will go to the Houston
Arboretum and the other half will benefit our local Ale Wagger partner BARC. On
the day of the Pup Crawl, come out to the Arboretum, and we’ll give you a punch
card. From there, there will be four stops to visit along the nature trail, and
you can crawl to them in any order you choose. Children can attend, under 21 do
not require a ticket.

Along the way, there will be
plenty of beer for you, as well as water and other goodies for your pup. When
you arrive at the last stop, you’ll redeem your punch card for an Ale Wagger
pint glass, hang out and enjoy a beer in the great outdoors. Food trucks will be
on site, along with a bunch of local vendors for a Pet Expo. BARC will be there
with dogs available for adoption, so you could leave with more dogs than you
started with!

There will be off-site parking
available near the Houston Arboretum.

You are welcome to bring
multiple dogs. All dogs do need to be on a leash during their time inside the
grounds of Memorial Park and the Arboretum. Lawn chairs are welcome as well, as
seating will be limited on the trail and at the final stop. This is a rain or
shine event. Prepare accordingly – you will be walking through an urban
forest!

Art of Tröegs Contest

It’s your turn to get in on the art! Our annual Art of Tröegs Contest has been happening for more than a decade now, and each year, it gets bigger and better. The challenge is simple: Create a piece of art inspired by Tröegs. It can be flat. It can be 3-dimensional. It can be a sculpture or a song. It can be anything you dream up, as long as it has a Tröegs twist. The winner will get $500 and be the star of the Art of Tröegs Gallery above the Splinter Cellar of our Hershey brewery!

We taste: tart citrus rind, spring rain, subtle clove

New Splinter Beer Release!

Some call them trophies or grails or white whales. We call them Splinter beers.

Available now! Farmette joins our family of wood-aged beers as part of our Splinter Series beers.

A spell on oak with our house culture – a wayward mix of microflora we’ve been cultivating since our very first foray into wild fermentation – transformed this saison into something altogether unexpected. The wood tempers the traditional notes of clove and pepper, making way for layers of woodsy earthiness and lemon tang.

Farmette is available in 12.7oz. cork & cage bottles exclusively at the brewery in our General Store (take-out) and Tasting Room (on-premise consumption).

Splinter on the horizon

Coming March 22Blackberry Tizzy
One day, we muddled some fresh blackberries with brown sugar, lemon juice and bourbon. “Mmm,” we thought. “This should be a beer.” Blackberry Tizzy is that spirited daydream come true. Sour fermentation tempers the juicy blackberries with a touch of tartness, and a spell in bourbon barrels delivers ripples of oak and toasted coconut.
Blackberry Tizzy will be available in 12.7oz. cork & cage bottles exclusively at the brewery in our General Store (take-out) and Tasting Room (on-premise consumption).

Scratch Beer Roundup

We’ve got lots going on with our Scratch Series this month! Scratch #320 is our latest effort to bring body to a lower-alcohol IPA without compromising aroma or flavor. With a winning combination of Azacca, Centennial, Chinook, and Comet hops, we upped the amount of unfermentable sugars even more for additional silkiness and smooth texture.
ABV: 5.2%
IBU: 40
We taste: juicy pineapple, grapefruit, hints of pine
Availability: draft & growler fills only

The impetus of Scratch #319 comes from one of our brewer’s homebrew recipes for a traditional German-style Festbier, or “Märzen” (German for “March”) lager. Brewed using a conventional technique of boiling the mash to introduce robust caramel flavors, our take on this timeless style is full-bodied and rich with plenty of toasty and sweet malty goodness you’d expect to find in a Fest lager.
ABV: 6.3%
IBU: 19
We taste: caramel, toasted bread, dried stone fruit
Availability: draft & growler fills only

Walking the fields during hop harvest, we were captivated by an intensely citrusy row called “Lemondrop.” Scratch #318 continues our focus on this lively hop boasting notes of lemon rind. For this version, we dropped the Caliente hops to allow tried-and-true Centennial to deliver some good old-fashioned citrus and intensify the lemon character. This is the latest of a few Double IPAs we plan to brew with Lemondrop to see how different malts and hops bring out its subtleties.
ABV: 9.9%
IBU: 52
We taste: juicy lemon, green tea, ripe melon
Availability: draft & growler fills only

For Scratch #316, our latest take on a boysenberry gose, we upped the fruit character and tartness with more boysenberries — a cross between a blackberry and a raspberry. The blackberry notes add a deep red grape-like juiciness, while the raspberry character adds a sweet-and-tangy pop. A hint of salt adds texture and helps pull through the berry goodness.
ABV: 4.5%
IBU: 7
We taste: sweet-tart jam, wildflowers, citrus
Availability: draft & growler fills only

Not too long ago, we got a taste of some two-row barley grown about a half hour away in Mount Joy. It wasn’t just local, it was amazing, and we hatched a plan to brew a PA-centric take on our cult classic Troegenator. The combination of Double Eagle’s barley and caramel rye gives “PA Nator” a deep, port-like maltiness and chewy body, and Cascade hops from Sunny Brae in Carlisle add subtle pine notes.
ABV: 8.2%
IBU: 31
We taste: rye bread, raisin, caramel
Availability: draft & growler fills only

Scratch #311 celebrates “Metal Brewer,” our Tröegs co-worker homebrew competition. Last year’s winning recipe, a Sangria-inspired IPA highlighting the Amarillo hop, wowed judges and attendees alike with its mélange of fresh fruit, maraschino cherries soaked in spiced rum, and toasted oak spirals saturated with Carménère, a dry red Chilean wine. Heavy-handed hopping with Amarillo provides an explosive grapefruit conclusion to this refreshing, fruity IPA.
ABV: 5.5%
IBU: 84
We taste: citrus zest, fruit cocktail, vanilla, hint of spiced rum
Availability: draft & growler fills only
