Hey Badassbeer!

I’m Jim, the brewing manager at the Boston Brewery. My to-do list varies every day, from propagating yeast for a brew, to running tests in the lab, to developing new recipes and performing quality evaluations, and sometimes operating our brewhouse equipment. But in my career as a brewer I’ve done every task imaginable. While I was in grad school for chemical engineering I began volunteering at a local brewery, where I helped on the bottling line – mostly in place of doing my research project. I received my master’s degree, but instead of staying for a Ph.D., I got an entry level job at a brewery and never looked back. This can be a difficult industry to start out in, with long hours and physically demanding work, but if you stick with it, you never know where you will end up! Working in the craft brewing industry is rewarding in so many ways, and there are great opportunities everywhere you look. One of the best parts of my job is getting to see the entire brew process through, from creating the recipe all the way to seeing our tour guests tasting the final product. LongShot American Homebrew Competition
For 20 years, Samuel Adams has searched coast to coast for the country’s best homebrews in our annual LongShot American Homebrew Contest. This month, the competition comes full circle with the release of the LongShot Variety Pack. This 6-pack includes two bottles each of our winners’ beers, which will also be available in limited draft. Join us in raising a toast to the winning brews:

DUANE WILSON’S WILD CHILD
This mixed-fermentation American wild ale leads with an aroma of stone fruits and spice. Apricots impart a dry, sweet flavor that leads to a pleasant, lingering tartness.

DAVID’S COUSINO’S BARNSTORM SAISON
This saison blends a soft malt character from white wheat with delicate floral notes of English hops, and finishes with a hint of pepper from Belgian yeast.

GRAHAM JOHNSON’S COFFEEHEAD IMPERIAL STOUT
This Imperial Stout is aged on cocoa nibs and its decadent flavors of chocolate, espresso, and hints of raisins, lead to a lingering sweetness to finish.

Samuel Adams Hosts Brewing the American Dream Pop–Up Pitch Room Competition to Celebrate Food & Beverage Innovators in Austin, TX.

Samuel Adams Brewing the American Dream hosted its first-ever Pop-Up Pitch Room Competition in celebration of start-ups gathering in Austin, TX for South by Southwest. Brewing the American Dream, Samuel Adams’s philanthropic program, provides micro-lending, coaching and mentoring to food, beverage, and craft brewing small business owners nationwide. Catherine Stiles, founder of Barbecue Wife Bloody Mary Mix, was awarded Grand Prize and named People’s Choice winner for having the best pitch based on the quality of the presentation, creativity, passion and product viability. Stiles won a $10,000 business grant, a media package from Foursquare, and will receive extensive business mentorship from of the team at Samuel Adams. Tapping into Austin’s celebration of interactive technology, drinkers at the event and nationwide were invited to virtually vote on Facebook Live for the “People’s Choice Award”, a $5,000 prize which Stiles also took home.

Samuel Adams Brewing the American Dream Launches New Website/We are also excited to announce the launch of our newly designed Brewing the American Dream website that brings to life the stories of our passionate entrepreneurs and provides access to resources for food and beverage small business owners interested in learning more about our program. It features an interactive map so you can check out small businesses that we partner with across the country. You can also browse our events calendar for the year so you can plan to attend a Speed Coaching event near you!

Samuel Adams Upcoming Speed Coaching / Join us as we kick-off off our 2017 Brewing the American Dream Speed Coaching season in Allentown, PA. Speed Coaching is an incredible opportunity for small business owners of food, beverage and craft brewing businesses to get real world coaching on a range of issues from sales and distribution, to packaging and finance, to marketing and social media. Coaches from Samuel Adams, local-area business experts, and Accion, the nation’s leading non-profit provider of small business capital, are on tap to give concrete information and advice to help entrepreneurs make smart decisions. Join us on Monday, May 8th from 6:00 – 8:30 p.m. at Allentown Brew Works, located at 812 Hamilton Street, Allentown, PA.

Come by the Samuel Adams Boston Brewery on Thursday, April 20th to celebrate our partnership with the Wellfleet SPAT! SPAT, or Shellfish Promotion and Tasting, Inc., promotes the shellfish farming industry in Wellfleet, MA. We’ll be pairing legendary Wellfleet oysters with beer, providing a sensory exploration experience! Your ticket gets you 6 samples of our newest beers to pair alongside 6 locally grown oysters. Because of the unique nature of this event, tickets will be $20.

This is a 21+ event and last call is at 8:15 p.m.

American Craft Beer Week
Pig Roast

Are you a fan of live bluegrass music, fresh cooked BBQ, and Samuel Adams beer? Join us Friday, May 12th as we kick off American Craft Beer Week with our 3rd Annual ACBW Pig Roast at the Samuel Adams Boston Brewery! We’re opening the doors to our brewery and hop garden and getting hog-wild with our friends from Blue Ribbon BBQ. the Four Bridge Bluegrass Band, and Nelson Hiller and Friends. We’ll be roasting several whole pigs and serving up pulled chicken and pork with all the sides n’ fixin’s, homemade beer BBQ sauces, and of course, plenty of brewery–exclusive Samuel Adams Beer! In addition to the live music, your ticket includes a full BBQ dinner (vegetarian option available) and six 7oz beer samples.

For serious BBQ and craft beer lovers, we’re thrilled to offer a very limited VIP session with Blue Ribbon BBQ’s head chef and a Certified Cicerone from the Boston Brewery, who will teach you the art of the carve and the perfect beer pairing. Your demonstration will include its very own pig, carving tips and tricks, and most importantly, a guided flight of exclusive brews from our Barrel Room Collection paired with different cuts of pork. The VIP session will last from 5:45–6:30 p.m. and afterward you’ll keep the festivities going with the party’s full beer and food spread.

This is a 21+ event. Last call is at 8:45. General Admission tickets are $30, and VIP Experience tickets are $55. Sorry, no refunds.

COOKING WITH SAM

BOSTON LAGER
APRICOT-MUSTARD GLAZE

Our Boston Lager Apricot-Mustard Glaze is a flavorful glaze for both pork and poultry dishes, and is perfect for any springtime occasion. The fiery heat of an English mustard contrasts the sweet flavor of the apricot preserves and is rounded out by the well-balanced malt notes of Samuel Adams Boston Lager. Pour this seasonal glaze over a roast at the beginning of the cooking, and the flavor will continue developing as it cooks down and mixes with leftover juices in the pan. We like to pair this with – what else – Boston Lager, but try it with Fresh as Helles for a festive seasonal twist!

Directions:
Whisk together all ingredients. Season to taste.

INGREDIENTS

  • ½ Cup Samuel Adams Boston Lager
  • ½ Cup Apricot Preserves
  • 1 teaspoon Freshly Ground White Pepper
  • 1 Tablespoon Apple Cider Vinegar
  • ⅓ Cup English Mustard
  • Salt, to taste
