Saint Arnold News Letter

Saint Arnold Army Newsletter
Dear Saint Arnold’s Army:

3rd Annual Super Beef Sunday at Saint Arnold
Sunday, February 711:00 AM2:00 PM
The first Sunday in February means one thing around here: Super Beef Sunday. Oh sure, there’s also a football game being played. Maybe even a championship game. Perhaps what some might call a “Big Game.” We can’t remember what the game is called. We’re focused on the BBQ.

At our 3rd Annual Super Beef Sunday, a master of BBQ from Central Texas will be joined by a couple of young guns from Houston. Legendary Louie Mueller BBQ will be here alongside Pinkerton’s Barbecue and Feges BBQ. They’ll be doing what they do best – preparing and serving their finest smoked meats to fill your belly before you go to your game-watching party.

Of course, you’ll want tasty beverages to complement the BBQ, and that’s where we come in. Cold beer will be flowing, and you’ll be able to enjoy it from the commemorative Super Beef Sunday pint glass you’ll receive. How convenient!

Like previous years, Wayne of Louie Mueller BBQ will have pre-wrapped whole brisket and beef ribs available for pre-purchase (at the time of your ticket purchase). These beauties come with heating instructions, so you can tell your friends you cooked it all on your own. Wayne’s whole brisket will be $100 and a rack of three beef ribs will be $75.

Please note, while the event runs from 11:00 – 2:00 – and we will have plenty of BBQ for that time – do your best to arrive by 12:30, so you can try all of the different items the pitmasters will have to offer.

Tickets are $50 per person and include tastings from all three pitmasters, beer and a commemorative pint glass. Briskets and beef ribs to take home must be ordered at the time of your ticket purchase. They will not be available to purchase at the event.

Get your Super Beef Sunday tickets here.

Pub Nights in 2016: Now Every Friday!
Here’s our New Year’s Resolution: We’re going to host Pub Nights in our Beer Hall every Friday evening! Okay, there will be a few exceptions here and there, but we’ll have exactly 47 Pub Nights this year. Essentially, our Beer Hall hours on Fridays will now be 11:00 AM – 10:00 PM.

The way Pub Nights run won’t change. We’ll continue to tap rare beers from our cellar and one-off concoctions from the minds of our brewers. Our kitchen will continue to serve up tasty treats. You showed up in droves to play Trivia last month, so we’ll be bringing back Geeks Who Drink and other fun activities throughout the year.

This Friday, January 8, we’ll have a wealth of special releases. In bottles, we’ll have Bishop’s Barrel No. 7 and 12 along with Divine Reserve No. 14 and 15. On tap, we’ll have Pumpkinator 2014 and cask conditioned Art Car IPA.

Since it finally feels like winter outside, we’ll also be debuting a special version of Winter Stout, which was fermented in used bourbon barrels. We’re calling it Kling to Wood Stout.

As always, you’re welcome to come with an appetite. Chef Ryan and our kitchen crew will be serving delicious Pub Night fare including Burgers, Brats, Crawfish Rolls, Philly Steak Sandwiches and Spicy Pineapple Teriyaki Wings.

Valentines for Veterans at Saint Arnold
Monday, January 186:009:00 PM

We’ve been teaming up with Valentines for Veterans for several years now to host an evening of beer and crafts for a great cause. The event raises funds for an incredible local organization, Expedition Balance. This group is committed to providing holistic support for Houston-area combat veterans facing PTSD.

Here’s how the evening works:

  • $10 gets you entry into the brewery. $5 from each ticket will go directly to Expedition Balance. Taps are open for the evening.
  • Craft tables will be set up so you can get creative and make valentines to honor our veterans.
  • Browse the bake sale featuring sweet and savory items from some of Houston’s best pastry chefs and home bakers. Enjoy with your beer or take home for later! All proceeds will be donated. There will also be a raffle featuring items from some of Houston’s best local businesses.
  • Two of Houston’s best food trucks, Blood Brothers BBQ and Taco Nuts, will be outside in the parking lot ready to feed you! They are generously donating 5% of their proceeds as well.

January Events, Oysters, and Cribbage!

Happy New Year, everyone! Like many people do in the new year, we’ve made a few resolutions. The most important one is to spend more time with good friends doing what we love to do – playing games and eating great food! To help us with this resolution, we have some great events lined up this month.

First up is a beer dinner at Revolution Taproom and Grill on Thursday, January 14, 2016 at 6 pm. This 5-course meal offers mouthwatering dishes such as Lacquered Scallops & Pork Belly, Buttermilk Fried Chicken, and warm Dulce de Leche Cake. For more information on this beer dinner, including the full menu, please check out our website. Or, call Revolution at 603-244-3022 for a reservation!

Next up – cribbage night! We love games. For us, it is the ultimate form of relaxation – especially when paired with drinking a few beers! 🙂 We also love when folks come in to the brewery, grab one of the games from the shelf, and start playing, laughing, and having a great time. To that end, we thought we would deem Wednesday, January 13th (at 6pm) Cribbage Night, and see if anyone would be interested in showing up and playing a few games. We have three boards here, and we would love if folks bring a board if they have it. Shoot us an email to let us know you are coming, so that we can reserve a large enough table. And, if there is enough interest, we can make this a regular event!

Below, you can find more information on our other January events, including Oyster night on January 20th!

–Annette & Nicole

January events
Jan 9th – Farmers’ Market Rollinsford, NH
Jan 12th & 13th – Beer & Game dinner at the Black Trumpet featuring our beer collaboration with Smuttlabs called Soggy Donkey – a White IPA fermented with Brett. Look for this beer at our brewery in the next week!
Jan 13th- Cribbage night. 6pm
Jan 13th- Our first Unafraid of the Dark V beer will be released!
Jan 14th- Beer Dinner at Revolution. 6pm
Jan 16th – Patriots Playoff Game in the Brew House 4:30pm
Jan 20th- Oyster night! 4-9pm
Jan 23rd – Farmers’ Market Exeter, NH
Jan 31st – Book Club @1pm. We will be discussing “Among the Ten Thousand Things” by Julia Pierpont.
Several years ago, we brewed an Oyster Stout for our Unafraid of the Dark beer series. It was roasty, a touch briney, and nice & light in body for a stout. We loved it! So when we discovered that one of our Throwback customers also owned an oyster company (Bay Point Oysters), we thought, “hey, we should make that beer again!”. Well, we are making it again – on January 20th.

The last time we made this beer, we took the oysters right out of the kettle, rinsed off the hops, fried them, and made the most delicious Po’ Boys we ever tasted!

Since we now have a much bigger system (i.e, many more oysters) and a restaurant, we thought we would give the beer oysters this year to Chef Carrie to work her magic and share the results with you. As such, on Wednesday, January 20th, the special for the night will be Oyster Po’ Boys made using the oysters from the beer… and whatever else Chef might have up her sleeve! Yum!

Sam Adams News Letter

Hey Badassbeer!

Happy New Year! It’s hard to believe another holiday season has come and gone, but here at the brewery we’re excited for what January has in store. It might be the coldest month of the year, but we’re embracing that by hosting an awesome open house, listening to (and rewarding) your conversation about the weather on social media, and of course, warming up with some great beers. We have a few brews fresh out of the fermenters that are headed your way, as well as several returning favorites including Cold Snap and Scotch Ale, winner of our 2015 “Brewer’s Vault” drinker vote. With all of that to look forward to, you won’t even notice the temperatures dipping. Cheers to a new year and new beer!

Cabin Pack

The coldest season is around the corner, but don’t hunker down until you’ve picked up the Samuel Adams Cabin Pack. In addition to introducing a brand new Session Ale, we’re excited to bring back some classics including Scotch Ale, the winner of our Brewer’s Vault contest in which we asked you to vote for your favorite throwback beer to bring back in 2016. We have a good feeling this year’s pack will get you through winter’s chilliest days.

Boston Lager: The backbone of the Samuel Adams family of beers, this complex and balanced lager is a great brew no matter what time of year.

Cold Snap: This crisp and hazy golden White Ale is a sign of warmer days to come with its refreshing blend of smooth wheat and subtle kick of spring spices, fruit, and floral flavors.

Noble Pils: Brewed in the Bohemian tradition yet anything but ordinary, this crisp golden lager is full of character with all five Noble hops for a layered fresh and citrusy flavor.

Escape Route: Our take on the classic Kölsch style combines the subtle fruit notes of an ale with the smooth crispness of a lager for a bright, refreshing brew.

Session Ale: This down-to-earth ale, available only in this pack, celebrates the floral, bitter, and slightly spicy character of Tettnanger hops, along with more earthy notes from East Kent Goldings.

Scotch Ale: Full-bodied with roasted and chocolate malt notes, this beer’s subtle smoky flavor is followed by a lingering, sweet finish and distinct coffee character. Brought back by drinker demand, this beer is only available in our Cabin Pack. Once it’s gone, it’s gone!

Coldest Week of the Year

You can’t fight the weather and with another New England winter about to bear down on us, we’ve decided to celebrate it instead. We’re heralding Cold Snap’s return by celebrating the coldest week of the year – typically the third week of January. Take to Twitter to let @SamuelAdamsBeer know how miserable your weather is. We’ll watch the conversation, declare the city with the most cold weather-related buzz, and then throw a party for all those who endured the coldest of the cold.

More of a show-not-tell person? Post a picture on Instagram expressing how you feel about the winter with #SnapTheCold #Contest (you must use both) @SamuelAdamsBeer and we’ll pick a winner every week to receive a Cold Snap prize pack and a $50 American Express gift card. Find a Cold Snap party near you here.

Coming Soon: Sam Adams Nitro Project

It’s a new year, and that means new beers! The Sam Adams Nitro project launches at the end of this month and is unlike anything we’ve done before. Known for their captivating cascades and smooth creaminess, nitrogenated beers are often linked to stouts; but we’re breaking the mold, introducing a White Ale, IPA, and Coffee Stout. One sip of our smooth, velvety Nitro White Ale with its light wheat character and hints of orange and peppery spice, and you’ll be hooked. The IPA, at 100 IBUs, is dry-hopped to achieve a bold hop character with resinous pine and citrus hop notes, while still maintaining the classic nitro smoothness we love. The rich, robust Coffee Stout has notes of bittersweet chocolate and dark fruit, and is made with Sumatran and Indian Monsoon Malabar coffees that add a deep, roasty finish. Look for all three in 15oz. cans and Nitro White Ale on draft starting at the end of January. Find out more here, then pop, pour, and enjoy!

BTAD Updates/Events

Last month a panel of judges, including our Founder and Brewer Jim Koch, named New York City-based Chic-a-peas the winner of the 2015 Brewing the American Dream Pitch Room Competition. Chic-a-peas co-founders Dave Levi and Darren Shlisky were awarded a $10,000 grant and will receive a year’s worth of coaching and mentoring from Samuel Adams employees. To learn more about the Pitch Room Finals and where to find Chic-a-peas products, click here.

BTAD Spotlight on: Harlem Chocolate Factory, New York
The Harlem Chocolate Factory is an artisan chocolate company based right in the heart of Harlem. This female-owned business started by chocolatier Jessica Spaulding uses high-quality ingredients in its premium, decadent chocolates, which Jessica shared with us when she competed in our New York City Pitch Room Regional event in November.
Click here to learn more about Harlem Chocolate Factory and the awesome handcrafted treats, including Harlem bars, truffles, bark, and more, that pay homage to Harlem’s culture and history!

To learn more about other small businesses in our program across the country, visit our website. Cheers to knowing our beer doesn’t just taste good, it does good!

Inspired by the traditional Belgian witbier style, we developed our own take on this brilliant brew. The truly unique taste of Samuel Adams Cold Snap is created from our signature spice blend that gives it a distinct and lively character. This blend ranges from fruits to spices and even a few flowers to create a myriad of flavors to discover with each sip. We also dry spice the beer, similar to dry hopping, to bring out the full character of the fresh ground spices. From the subtle sweetness of orange peel and plum to the peppery bite of fresh ground coriander, the blend of spices creates just the right refreshing kick to signal that spring is on its way.

Check out our Find a Sam page to find a Cold Snap near you.

The holidays may be behind us, but now is the best time to head over to our e-store for the year-end clearance event. Check out our selection of t-shirts, hats, glassware, and accessories, all available for a limited time at up to 50% off! After all, it’s never too early to start planning next year’s gift-giving.

In our opinion, there is no better Samuel Adams experience than the one you get here at the Boston Brewery. Come learn about our history, the brewing process and, of course, taste some of our award winning beers.

Lobster & Brie Soup made with Samuel Adams Cold Snap

Shell the lobster reserving shell for stock. Split tail meat length-wise and refrigerate. To make stock, combine the Samuel Adams
®, water, thyme, and lobster shell. Bring to a slow boil, cover, and simmer on low for 40 minutes. Strain then simmer to reduce broth to 2 ½ cups. Add half & half and continue simmering until reduced by half again. Cover and set aside. In a heavy skillet, melt butter on medium. When foam subsides, add shallots and sauté for 1 minute. Add lobster meat and sauté briefly until the lobster turns pink. Remove and cool. Pull the lobster meat into long shreds. Add heavy cream and Brie cheese to the reduced broth, stirring constantly over medium-low heat. When the cheese is almost melted, mix in shredded lobster and shallot mixture, add pepper to taste, simmer gently for 2 minutes. Garnish with paprika and serve immediately.

  • Ingredients:
  • 3/4 pound lobster tail or 1 pound lobster claws
  • 1 ½ cups Samuel Adams® Cold Snap
  • 3 ½ cups water
  • 1 teaspoon thyme, finely crushed
  • 3 cups half & half
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 3 shallots, finely minced
  • 3 cups heavy cream
  • ½ pound Brie cheese, with skin, cut into 6 chunks
  • Freshly ground black pepper to taste
  • Paprika for garnish
