Sam Adams News Letter

Hey Badassbeer!

It seems like yesterday that we were waiting for the snow to melt here in Boston, so it’s hard to believe that Winter is right around the corner. The good news is: with Thanksgiving comes family, good food, and a rich selection of seasonal beers like Winter Lager at our fingertips. So we’re not complaining! On tap this month, we’re introducing our new Rebel Grapefruit IPA and sharing news about our next batch of Utopias. More on that below. We’re also celebrating Friendsgiving, a one-of-a-kind beer festival, and some great Brewing the American Dream events. So, grab yourself a pint of Winter Lager and enjoy this month’s edition of What’s on Tap!

Grapefruit IPA

We’re excited to announce the arrival of the newest member of the Rebel IPA family, Samuel Adams Rebel Grapefruit IPA, a West Coast-style IPA brewed with real grapefruit juice and peel for an added punch of citrusy goodness. We packed four different hop varieties – Mosaic, Citra, Centennial, and Cascade – into this brew to achieve a perfect balance between the juicy, citrusy hop character and the slightly sharp, refreshing grapefruit notes. Bright, bold, and thirst-quenching, you’re going to want to get your hands on this as soon as possible. Find out more here!

2015 Utopias

The world-renowned Samuel Adams Utopias is back for another limited release. This year’s edition is a blend of batches, some of which have been aged for up to 22 years in various barrels at our Boston Brewery. In addition to single-use bourbon casks from the award-winning Buffalo Trace Distillery, the 2015 Utopias blend also spent time in Madeira, Carcavelos, Cognac, and Armagnac barrels. This allowed it to develop elegant dark fruit aromas and complex layers of nutty oak, toffee, honey, and fig. Finally, aging in hand-selected finishing barrels contributed woody, molasses, and tobacco notes. Clocking in at 28% ABV, this batch has a slight sweetness and deep, rich, malty smoothness reminiscent of a vintage Port, fine Cognac, or aged Sherry. One of our rarest and most sought-after releases, Utopias is unlike any other
beverage in the world.

Meet Serge Libioulle of Belgium Delights, one of the newest Brewing the American Dream Small Business Owners!

Growing up in Belgium, Serge always dreamed of owning his own business. After relocating to the United States, Serge worked in IT for more than 15 years but after being laid off, found himself thinking about his dream again. His passion for cooking and the lack of authentic Belgian food in the U.S. motivated him to start his own business, Belgium Delights. Belgium Delights features authentic Belgian specialties such as mouth-watering frites, waffles, and Brioche, and a secret family recipe for a garlic aioli sauce. After being turned away by banks for a small business loan, he turned to the Samuel Adams Brewing the American Dream program.

Armed with the capital and resources he needed, Serge was able to purchase equipment for his farmers market booth, including two commercial fryers and two imported commercial waffle irons. Belgium Delights has been in business for only three years and is already a thriving family enterprise and a local success within the busiest farmers markets in San Diego. After endless requests from customers, Serge is expanding to the wholesale market to sell his special garlic aioli and his new sriracha aioli to local, high-end grocery stores, and hopes to expand nationwide in the next five years. His special event business is also building with increased demand for his booth at weddings, parties, local beer events, and festivals around town. If you’re in the San Diego area, stop by one of the farmers markets and try Serge’s menu; just one bite will transport you to Belgium! For more information on Serge and Belgium Delights, visit

German brewers may have been on to something centuries ago when they created bold, rich bock beers for the winter. Originating in Einbeck, Germany as a means of providing sustenance during Lent, this style’s roasted malts create a warming, hearty character that’s the perfect remedy for winter’s harsh bite. Our beer is a dark wheat bock subtly spiced with a blend of fresh ground Indonesian & Vietnamese cinnamon along with ginger and orange peel for a deep, smooth flavor and malty finish that will warm you on a cold winter’s night.

Winter Lager is officially hitting shelves this month, and what better way to enjoy this classic brew than with the Samuel Adams Winter Lager glass? This 16oz tulip-shaped pint glass comes in a set of two, so it’s perfect for enjoying with a friend or relative this holiday season.

Samuel Adams Winter Lager Yam and Red Skinned Potatoes Au Gratin

‘Tis the season to eat, drink, and be thankful for good friends and great beer. Get in the holiday spirit by hosting a Friendsgiving dinner complete with your favorite Samuel Adams brews. We’ll be throwing Friendsgiving celebrations nationwide, but if you’re organizing your own and searching for recipe inspiration, look no further than this tasty beer-infused side dish.

Serves 4
Preheat oven to 375 F
Toss sliced yam, potatoes, and onion in a large bowl with salt and lemon juice, mixing thoroughly. Transfer mixture to a colander and allow it to drain in the sink for 20 minutes.
In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt butter. Add flour, whisk, and cook for 2 minutes. Pour beer in slowly, stirring constantly, and cook until thickened (approx. 3 minutes).
Remove from heat.
Pour the sliced potato, yam, and onion mixture back into the bowl and add in all other ingredients, reserving 1 cup of cheese to top the gratin. Mix to combine and pour the mixture into a 9”x13” ovensafe dish greased with bacon drippings. Pat the mixture into the pan to an even thickness.
Bake for 25 minutes, top with remaining cheese, and return to oven. Continue to bake until top is bubbling and browned, approximately 25 additional minutes (50 minutes total).
