Saint Arnold Army Newsletter

Dear Saint Arnold’s Army:

Fresh Hop Ale 2015 is Now Available

When hops are harvested, there is a 48 hour period when they can be used fresh in the brewing process. These fresh hops create a slightly softer bitter than dried hops do, and for the past few years, we’ve been brewing a single batch beer with freshly harvested hops.

For the 2015 version of Fresh Hop Ale, we revisited the single hop Session IPA recipe we enjoyed so much last year. This year, we used a relatively new hop varietal, Equinox, every step of the way.

420 lbs. of fresh Equinox hops were added within 36 hours of being harvested – and within an hour and a half of arriving at the brewery. These hops give the beer a prominent citrus aroma with hints of tropical fruits and subtle herbal notes. The medium-light body of this beer, combined with an aggressive but balanced bitterness, make it a truly enjoyable and drinkable IPA.

Fresh Hop Ale is a draft only release. You can find it now at bars and restaurants around town (and here at the brewery) while it lasts. We recommend enjoying this beer quickly to fully appreciate the hop flavors.

American Roggenbier

Our Newest Icon Red is American Roggenbier
The next release in our Icon series is an American Roggenbier, our take on a traditional German Roggenbier, which literally translates to “rye beer.” The style was once commonly brewed and popular in Bavaria. Our version has a couple of slight twists.

First, it is hopped like an American Pale Ale with piney, citrusy Cascade and Chinook hops. It also features less rye that its German counterpart – roughly 15% as opposed to the traditional 50% or more. It’s enough rye to make it noticeably spicy without being overbearing. Notes of banana esters and clove phenols from the German weizen yeast complement the spicy character of the rye malt. Icon Red is an unfiltered beer, which is traditional to the style.

You can enjoy Icon Red now on tap, and bottles will be available in stores beginning in early November. Learn more about Icon Red – American Roggenbier.

Houston Football Fans: Join Us in Miami This Weekend

When we launched our beer in South Florida earlier this year, we began thinking of excuses to travel to Miami. Luckily, this year’s football schedule provides us with the perfect one. If you’re hitting the road this weekend to follow the hometown team, join us for a beer!
We’re teaming up with the good folks of the Traveling Texans, a fan group that travels around the country to support the team. They say Miami is one of their most popular locations – go figure. Here’s what we’ve got planned for the weekend.

On Saturday, we’ll meet the Traveling Texans at the Marriot Stanton South Beach where we’ll join them for their Group Photo at 5:00 PM. Of course, we’ll be bringing some beer to the beach.

From there, we’ll spread the love to Fort Lauderdale for a Tap Takeover at The Brass Tap from 7:00 – 9:00 PM (this is different from the official Traveling Texans Group Meetup). They’ll have Fancy Lawnmower, Weedwacker, Santo, Ale Wagger, Elissa IPA, Endeavour, Pumpkinator and Bourbon Barrel Pumpkinator on tap, as well as limited bottles of BB1-BB6, BB8, BB10 and DR15.

On Sunday, we’ll of course be tailgating before the game. You’ll find us in the South East Orange Lot (Entrances 15 and 16) with the other Houston fans. We’ll be bringing plenty of beer with us including cans of Fancy Lawnmower, Santo and Oktoberfest. Enjoying a Houston beer on the road is definitely good karma.

A Word from our Executive Chef:
Halloween Food and Beer Pairings

Our Executive Chef Ryan Savoie has Halloween on his mind, and this year, he’s asking the tough questions. Like, what even is Halloween food? Who is the true face of Halloween? Is it Jamie Lee Curtis? Or William Shatner? Vincent Price, maybe? Where do Swedish Meatballs fit in to all this? Perhaps most importantly, what beers should we be enjoying during this madness?

Get all the answers straight from the pen of Chef Ryan.

The Shining at Market Square Park
Wednesday, October 28 at 7:30 PM

The tide of terror that swept America is sweeping Market Square Park on the evening of Wednesday, October 28. Alamo Drafthouse’s Rolling Roadshow is setting up shop, and the screening is free and open to the parking (as is street parking after 6:00 PM). For a scary movie beer pairing, Niko Niko’s will be tapping a keg of Pumpkinator in addition to their usual Saint Arnold offerings.

All work and no beer makes Jack a dull boy.

Halfway to Santo De Mayo Social Run
at Flying Saucer, Downtown
Sunday, November 1 at 9:00 AM

Our Santo De Mayo 5K will be returning in May, so now’s the time to start preparing. Of course, the way to prepare for our 5K is by running through Downtown and enjoying beers and breakfast tacos.

We’ll start at the Saucer, run to the brewery and finish back at the Saucer. Pre registration is not required. You can come out and run for free, or you can pay $15 and get three Saint Arnold beers, a pint glass and two breakfast tacos. That’s a heck of a deal.

You can also register for the Santo De Mayo 5K on site. $40 will get you the above, plus registration for the run on Sunday, May 1.

Learn more and see the course map on Facebook.

Friday the 13th at Scream World
Friday, November 13 at 7:30 PM

We’re celebrating Friday the 13th at the scariest place on Earth – or at least in the Houston area – with a showing of the original 1980 classic Friday the 13th. Is there any other way?

We’ll have cans out there available for purchase, and the haunts will also be open that night for a separate ticket purchase.
