Smuttynose update Newsletter

Plaid Friday is November 28

Avoid Black Friday insanity and get “Glad with Plaid” at Smuttynose!

Some folks prefer cold waits outside of large stores, insane bargains for electronics and other shopping events that seem to show a little of humanity’s dark side. At Smuttynose, we’d like to offer you an alternative to all of that madness at our Plaid Friday extravaganza. What can you expect from Smuttynose Plaid Friday? We’re so glad you asked!

  • The debut of Smistletoe, an oak-aged biere de garde brewed with sweet cherries, plums and black currants. We bottled a limited number of screen-printed, black ceramic 750ml bottles that will only be available at Smuttynose. Glass 750ml bottles will be going into select markets in limited amounts.
  • Hungry? Enjoy delicious sliders from Belle’s on Wheels food truck from 11am-4pm. These folks sling the deliciousness from their mobile kitchen.
  • Help us trim our tree! We’re putting up a bare Christmas tree, and we need you to bring ornaments! For each ornament hung on the tree, we’ll donate $2 to Hampton Community Coalition, an all-volunteer nonprofit community action group working to improve the health and well being of Hampton area children and families, particularly those caught in difficult life transitions or without a permanent home.
  • Everyone hates fruitcake! Take out your family stress on the much-maligned holiday dessert and be rewarded for doing it well! That’s right, we’re building our own fruitcake toss and you can win fabulous prizes by tossing a cake into Santa’s mouth.
  • Last but not least, we’ll have range of excellent wearables and drinkables on special holiday sale. It’s a great way to buy something for the beer lover on your list, and for yourself.

Doors open at the oh-so-reasonable hour of 10am and we hope you’ll join the festivities. Otherwise, read on below for beer release news, an update on Hayseed, our restaurant and a great way to elevate your Thanksgiving turkey to new heights of awesomeness.

We wish you all a happy Thanksgiving!

Thanksgiving is about as food-heavy of a holiday as it gets. When my mom suggested having a ham as back-up for our large gathering this year; I thought she was crazy, but then I realized we just might need it. Just like last year, we’re brining our turkey with Old Brown Dog and if history tells us anything, there may not even be a sandwich’s-worth of meat left over.

The recipe came from the shaman of craft beer cuisine, Sean Z. Paxton (above), and can be found here on his website. You don’t need any obscure ingredients, just a little advance planning. This is the second best use for Old Brown Dog.

If you OBD-brine your turkey, please tell us how it turned out on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram.

Our Towle Farm beer releases are nearly set for the rest of the year. Here’s a look up our sleeve.

  • Out Now- Really Old Brown Dog four packs and Smuttlabs Grisette (3.8% farmhouse ale)
  • 11/22- Zinneke (8.7% Belgian stout) and Smuttlabs Finkelstein (6% hoppy lager)
  • 11/29 Smistletoe (8.5% barrel-aged biere de garde with sweet cherries, plums and black currants)
  • 12/6 Smuttlabs Gose (5% tart wheat beer made with coriander and salt)
  • 12/15 Smuttlabs Rye Stout (5.5%, fermented with an English ale yeast)
  • 12/20 Smuttlabs Smoked Peach Berliner Weisse (7% tart wheat beer made with smoked peaches)
  • 12/27 Durty (8.4% hoppy brown ale)
Construction is finally underway at Hayseed, our new farmstyle restaurant at the Towle Farm brewery. The exterior of the building has been painted and crews have recently completed insulating the walls and roughing in the electrical needs. A truck full of sheet rock arrived late last week. This seems like as good of a time as any to tell you a bit more about what we’ll be offering at Hayseed.

We’re planning to offer 26 different beers on tap, along with two cask-conditioned offerings, draft wine and a small bottle selection. A one-page menu will allow us to be nimble with local fish, produce and meat in additional to daily chalkboard specials

We’ll have more updates soon, but we’re definitely glad to announce that construction is underway and still on track for a January 2015 opening.

Fresh designs to hide under your sweaters and parkas are now in stock!
