Sam Adams Newsletter

Hey Badassbeer!

Happy October! We’ve had a really great month here at the Boston Brewery. We kicked it off at the Great American Beer Fest in Denver, CO where two of our beers, Double Bock and Tetravis, were awarded gold medals! We also made some pretty exciting announcements at the festival, including our 2014 LongShot American Homebrew Contest winners and we also named our Brewing the American Dream Experienceship craft brewer (more on those below). We hope you enjoy this month’s edition of What’s on Tap!

LongShot American Homebrew Contest Winners

The LongShot American Homebrew Contest began as a way for us to recognize and honor American homebrewers who continue to push the boundaries of what beer can be, just as Jim did 30 years ago in his kitchen as he homebrewed the first batches of Boston Lager.

This year’s winning beers are:

Greg Rasmussen’s Robust Porter (Forestville, CA)

Matthew Knott’s Classic Rauchbier (Smithtown, NY)

John Marra’s Dunkelweiss (Samuel Adams Employee based in Brooklyn, NY)

This year’s winners offer three unique and distinct brews that will be made available nationwide next spring as part of the 2015 Samuel Adams LongShot variety six-pack. Congratulations to our three winners and thank you to all of the homebrewers who entered their beers! Stay tuned for details about next year’s competition!

OctoberFest Stein Hoisting

The Oktoberfest celebration in Munich may be over for this year, but we’re still having drinkers duke it out in our National Stein Hoisting competition to crown a male and female champion to send to next year’s celebration.

Think you can hoist a full liter stein longer than anyone else? Visit our website to check out the national leaderboard and to find an official Samuel Adams Stein Hoisting event near you.

Kosmic Mother Funk Grand Cru Tour – Vote Now!

We’ve had a great time taking Kosmic Mother Funk (KMF) Grand Cru on the road on our cross country, 12-city tour. We’ve mapped out the first 11 cities where we’re tapping KMF kegs, but you get to decide the final stop. Nominations have been pouring into our website! Right now Kansas City, Missouri and Trenton, New Jersey are neck and neck in the top spot, but the battle isn’t over. Voting ends on October 17th, so be sure to get yours in!

Brewing the American Dream Craft Brewer’s Experienceship

Congratulations to our Samuel Adams Brewing the American Dream Brewing and Business Experienceship winners: founder and head brewer Grant Fraley and co-founder and CEO Marta Jankowska of ChuckAlek Independent Brewers.

ChuckAlek Independent Brewers opened its doors in January of 2013 in Ramona, CA. Named after their grandfathers, Chuck and Alek, the brewery pulls some of the past into the present by creating “Old School Beers for New School Palates.”

Similar to an extended internship, our annual Experienceship provides one craft brewer with hands-on educational and enrichment experiences that are tailored to their individual business needs. Brewers that apply and are selected travel to our Boston Brewery for extensive coaching from our team on various areas such as ingredients sourcing, quality assurance, brewing, sales and distribution, among others. Past winners include Brewery Rickoli in Denver, CO and Roc Brewing Co. in Rochester, NY, and MateVeza in San Francisco, CA.

This rich brew indulges in flavor with over 28 lbs. of real pumpkin per barrel, for a full bodied sweetness and deep russet color. Classic pumpkin pie spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice ignite a warmth that’s deepened by an undercurrent of roasty smoked malts. The result is a delectable brew full of enveloping layers of flavor and spice.

In our opinion, there is no better Samuel Adams experience than the one you get here at the Boston Brewery. Come learn about our history, the brewing process and, of course, taste some of our award winning beers.

Samuel Adams OctoberFest Smoked German Mustard

Kris Schoenberger, owner and grill master at BBQ’d Productions, a small business that participates in our Brewing the American Dream program, put together a really great mustard recipe made with our OctroberFest. It’s awesome with pretzels or as a condiment on hot dogs or hamburgers at your next tailgate.

DIRECTIONS: Mix the OctoberFest beer and brown mustard seeds in a pot on the stove, bring to a boil and then simmer for 20 minutes. After simmering, turn off heat and allow the seeds to soak in the beer for one hour. Pour seed and beer mixture into a blender and puree until you reach a smooth consistency, with a little grain still left. In a mixing bowl, mix together the water and malt vinegar and then add the dry mustard, brown sugar, onion powder, garlic powder, hickory smoke flavoring, and black pepper. Take the mixture from the mixing bowl and mix well with the OctoberFest and brown mustard seed puree. Pour into a glass jar or container. The mustard will remain good for up to one month as long as it is stored in the refrigerator.
