Crisp. Hoppy. Pilsner. Learn More
After a brutally cold and unforgiving winter season, we at Tröegs have been experiencing some serious cabin fever. And what better way to usher in sunny skies and warm temperatures than with our summer seasonal, Sunshine Pils! Our crisp, refreshing thirst-quencher returns in 2014 as part of our Hop Cycle seasonal series. Cases, six-packs, and single 12oz. bottles are currently available in our General Store, and draft and growler fills are available in the Tasting Room. Also, kegs and cases have started shipping to retailers throughout our eight-state distribution footprint. Finally, we are excited to announce that Sunshine Pils is coming in cans! Expect to enjoy some liquid summer in cans by the first week in May. We can’t think of a better friend to take to the beach, on a hike, or on a camping trip!

Our bottle caps. Your imagination. Learn More
It’s time to dig out those old Tröegs bottle caps you’ve been saving. That’s right! The Art of Drinking Tröegs bottle cap art contest returns in 2014. The rules of the contest are simple: make art using Tröegs bottle caps. You can create your Tröegs-inspired masterpiece in any medium you desire: painting, sculpture, photography, textiles, etc. As long as you employ our bottle caps in its design, it is eligible for the contest. Don’t limit your creativity! We’ve gotten all kinds of imaginative entries over the years, many of which are on display throughout the brewery. Once all of the entries are received, we will recruit a panel of judges and pick what we feel are the five best examples of creative bottle cap use. The grand prize winner will receive $500 in cash. We will also open voting for a “People’s Choice Award” on our Facebook page once all entries are received. The People’s Choice winner will receive a $250 Tröegs gift card. Additionally, each of the three runner-up entries will receive a $50 Tröegs gift card. We will accept entries until midnight on September 1, 2014. Need more info? Click HERE for additional details. Drink Tröegs beer, get inspired and make art!

Scratch Beer Update Learn More
We just released three new Scratch Beers in the Tasting Room on Thursday, March 27. Scratch #135 – Rye Ale is a full-flavored Amber Rye Ale hopped with a healthy dose of Chinook, Crystal, and El Dorado hops and 15% Rye added to the malt bill to impart a subtle dry, spicy finish. Scratch #137 – IPA represents further refining of our HopCyclone process. Aggressively dry-hopped with 100lbs. of equal parts Cascade, Chinook, and Citra hops, this intense IPA doesn’t pull any punches. The flavor of Scratch #138 – Belgian Style Brown Ale originates in the Abbey Ale yeast strain, which produces a distinctive dried fruit quality similar to raisins, prunes, figs, and dates. As the flavor develops, the dried fruit character endures, adding traces of caramel, toffee, chocolate, and dark rum as well as subtle spices, roasted nuts, and toasted grains. We also still have Scratch #136 – Red Ale on tap in the Tasting Room, with a limited supply of bottles coming soon to the General Store. Hurry in to try them all before they disappear! On the Scratch Beer horizon, look for a new Session IPA as well as the return of Rugged Trail, both coming to draft lines in the Tasting Room later in April.

Saint Arnold Newsletter

Saint Arnold Army Newsletter

Dear Saint Arnold’s Army:

It’s not 100 degrees outside yet, but now’s the time to pull out your tie dye t-shirt – Summer Pils season is here. You’ll be seeing it replace Spring Bock around town in grocery stores and bars.

Our newly released Icon Blue – the first porter we’ve brewed – is also flowing around town, along with our newest year round release…

Boiler Room Berliner Weisse is Now Available

Boiler Room Berliner Weisse – our first new year round release in over two years – began its life as something of a mishap.

During the initial stages of a batch of Fancy Lawnmower, nobody had noticed that half of the malt ended up on the floor rather than in the mill. The result was 136 barrels of half strength wort, and brewer Stephen had two choices: dump it all or pull ten gallons off and see if he could make something out of it.

He put the ten gallons into a carboy, topped it off with a bottle of funky Belgian beer known to have lots of bacteria in it and stuck it in our boiler room to sour for a couple of days. After that, he boiled it, let it ferment normally and the result was a very interesting beer. Stephen did several subsequent test brews and developed a final recipe using 60% wheat.

All in all, Boiler Room is a light bodied but surprisingly flavorful sour wheat beer. The nose of the beer has a light Hersbrucker hop note and a distinct funkiness. The taste is sweet malt quickly going into a tart body and finish. The sour and malt flavors balance well all the way through creating a very refreshing beverage, akin to drinking a tart lemonade or limeade. For a beer with just over 3.5%, it creates a big experience for the palate.

Learn all about Boiler Room Berliner Weisse here, and look for it on tap in bars and restaurants and in 22 oz bomber bottles at your favorite stores.

Sam Adams newsletter

Hey Badassbeer!

When I brewed the first batches of Boston Lager in my kitchen, e-mail didn’t even exist. So as you can imagine, it is a little surreal for me to be sending this message out to you 30 years (and countless Boston Lagers) later.

Samuel Adams has been a big part of my life since I brewed the first batch of Boston Lager in 1984. There have been so many great memories and I am excited to share some of my favorite moments with you through this timeline we put together.

I hope you’ll enjoy exploring our journey and that you’ll take some time to share your favorite Samuel Adams moments with me by tagging them with #30YearsofSam on Instagram.

Since 30 is a pretty big milestone, we’re going to throw a pretty big party. We’ll be celebrating our 30th Anniversary as part of the Boston Calling Music Festival! Join us at Boston’s City Hall Plaza on May 23rd-25th to raise a pint to 30 amazing years.

The Boston Marathon is a long standing tradition in Boston, and we’re proud that this is our third year in a row as a sponsor, and that we can bring back our special Boston 26.2 Brew. This year is especially meaningful to me as we were able to host some of the families that were impacted by the tragedy, at our brewery, to brew one of the first batches of Boston 26.2 Brew.

Last year, following the heartbreaking events that took place on Marathon Monday, we committed to donating all of the proceeds from Boston 26.2 Brew to the Greg Hill Foundation. We are proud to continue that commitment this year.

Along with donating all proceeds of this year’s Boston 26.2 Brew, we will be hosting a fundraiser event at our Boston Brewery on Wednesday, March 26th. Join me and some of our other brewers as we raise a pint and raise funds for the Greg Hill Foundation to support the ongoing needs of families impacted at the 2013 Boston Marathon. RSVP here.

The brew will be available on draft for a limited time and will be served at select bars and restaurants along the race course and in Boston. To learn more about the beer and to see where it will be available, check out our blog.

We brew around 60 different styles of beer a year, including a variety of IPAs. We’re excited to release our newest IPA Hopology pack – this pack runs the gamut of IPAs, including a Belgian IPA, a Baltic IPA, a Rye IPA (newly created for this year’s pack), and even an IPL. Learn more about the beers in this pack:

Roggen Wolf: This smooth artful brew entices with its subtle sweetness yet reveals a cagey bite. The peppery spice of German rye in this IPA is complemented and sharpened by the undercurrent of piney and citrusy hop character of Ahtanum and Galaxy hops. Want to learn more about this new beer? Check out the blog for a Q&A with our nano brewer Eryn.

Grumpy Monk: The distinctive character of Belgian yeast with its spicy clove and fruit notes can be reimagined when combined with the brazen hop character of an IPA. These hops impart a citrusy, piney, and earthy flavor that’s balanced by a roasted malt sweetness.

Tasman Red: This wily red IPA gets its character from the Tasmanian hops that are full of grapefruit, pine, and earthy notes creating a bold flavor that threads throughout the taste. The hops are balanced by a core of roasty malts that give this brew body and richness with hints of toffee.

Third Voyage: We were inspired by Capt. James Cook whose 3rd voyage made him the first to navigate a treacherous route from England to New Zealand to the Pacific Northwest. Using Cascade hops from each of these three regions we created a brew that’s citrusy, earthy and full of bold character.

Double Agent IPL: Brewing innovation is about asking “what if?”. What if we gave an IPA a new identity and used some of our favorite West Coast hops, with their grapefruit, piney, & tropical fruit character, in a lager? The result is this boldly hoppy & flavorful brew with the crisp smoothness of a lager.

Whitewater IPA: The crisp white wheat, sweet citrus orange peel, and spicy coriander of a white ale form the base of this refreshing brew. The big hoppiness and grapefruit notes of an IPA bring the flavor to a new bold level. Our addition of apricots brings these flavors together and creates a soft fruit undertone and balance.

The IPA Hopology Variety Pack is available now – pick it up while you can!

Thirty years ago, I started The Boston Beer Company in my kitchen, breathing new life into my great great grandfather’s recipe and creating a high-quality, full flavored American beer. I couldn’t get a bank loan to fund my new business nor find a distributor to sell my beer. But I believed in it – and that with a little luck, people would try Samuel Adams and come to love it. Against the odds, a movement began, and Samuel Adams became a part of the American craft beer revolution.

In June 2008, I decided that the time was right for us to create a philanthropic program that stems from who we are as a company and give back to the community that has helped make Samuel Adams successful. Samuel Adams Brewing the American Dream champions the great ideas and dreams of small business owners nationwide who are pursuing their passion in the food and beverage, hospitality, and craft brewing industries. It also provides small business loans and coaching and mentoring for small businesses that are now facing the same challenges I faced 30 years ago.

Brewing the American Dream Speed Coaching Events

Through Samuel Adams Speed Coaching, small business owners in food, beverage and brewing can get expert, personalized business advice that they otherwise wouldn’t be able to access – advice I wish I would have had in the early days of developing Samuel Adams. Attendees have the opportunity to participate in up to six 20-minute, high-impact sessions with professionals who offer expertise ranging from packaging to sales and distribution to finance, legal, e-commerce, marketing and more.

Upcoming Speed Coaching Events:

Los Angeles – Tuesday, March 25th Register here
San Diego – Thursday, March 27th Register here Chicago – Monday, April 7th

Brewing the American Dream Pitch Room Competition

For the second year we are hosting a national contest for small business owners in the food and beverage industry who are interested in learning the art of “perfecting their pitch.” Being able to describe your business or product in a way that gets people excited is an important skill that was extremely helpful to me as I carried cold bottles of Boston Lager to bars and restaurants in the early days.

In addition, business owners will compete to win a $10,000 grant, extended coaching and mentoring from Samuel Adams, and the chance to pitch their product to a panel of retailers and buyers.

Do you have a great food or beverage product that you are really passionate about? Apply to one of our “Pitch Room” events nationwide and tell our panel of guest judges what you’ve got!

Since 1984, Samuel Adams Boston Lager has used only the finest hand-selected ingredients, including two-row malted barley and Bavarian Noble hops, to create this perfectly balanced, complex and full-flavored brew. Following my great-great grandfather’s recipe, we continue to use traditional brewing processes, including decoction mashing (a four vessel brewing process), krausening (a secondary fermentation), and dry hopping (adding fresh hops to the beer as it ages), which allow the high quality ingredients in Samuel Adams Boston Lager to form layers of complex flavor. Roasted and caramel malts impart a rounded sweetness and smooth body while the Hallertau Mittelfrueh and Tettnang Tettnanger Noble hops add a wide range of floral, piney and citrus notes. I drink a Boston Lager from every single batch. To this day, I still think it’s the best beer that we brew.

Check out our Find a Sam page to find Boston Lager near you.

In our opinion, there is no better Samuel Adams experience than the one you get here at the Boston Brewery. Come learn about our history, the brewing process and, of course, taste some of our award winning beers.

Samuel Adams® Irish Red Soda Bread

Recipe by Sandy Russo of LuLu’s Sweet Shoppe, beneficiary of the Brewing the American Dream Program.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Let beer stand until flat, about 20-30 minutes. Spray 9” cake pan with cooking spray then line bottom of pan with parchment paper. In a large bowl combine flour, sugar, baking powder, caraway seeds, and salt. Stir in raisins. Stir in beer, milk, butter, and one egg until a dough forms. On a floured surface, knead dough until smooth. Shape into round loaf. Cut a 1/2″ deep ‘X’ into the top of the bread. Lightly beat remaining egg and brush over dough. Bake 55 minutes or until loaf sounds hollow when tapped on bottom. Remove from pan and cool on rack. Eat warm for best taste!

Dear Saint Arnold’s Army:

The Newest Beer in Our Icon Series,
Brown Porter is Now Available
You’ve been asking us for many years to brew a porter, and we thought the Icon series was the perfect way to introduce one. Brewer Dennis Rhee has been working on this one for a couple of years. Here is his description:

“This beer pours a dark brown/black color with ruby/garnet highlights and an off-white head. The aroma is predominantly chocolate with hints of nuttiness and lightly roasted coffee. The Saint Arnold yeast contributes mild esters, giving depth and balance. Chocolate and roast are the primary flavors in this sessionable ale, with a distinct sweetness coming through as the beer warms up.”

Learn more about Icon Blue – Brown Porter.

You can find Icon Blue in four packs at your favorite grocery and liquor stores and on tap at bars and restaurants around town.

Fly Fishing Film Tour and Heroes on the Water Benefit
Thursday, April 17 at the Brewery
Are you a fishing and outdoor enthusiast? Then this event is for you. Every year the
Fly Fishing Film Tour, or F3T, travels around the country bringing world class fly fishing films to local angler communities. We’re partnering with our friends at the Alamo Drafthouse Rolling Roadshow to deliver the two films on a big screen right outside the brewery in the parking lot.

Your $25 ticket gets you entry into the event, your beers for the evening, and a portion of the ticket price will go to benefit Heroes on the Water. There will also be a silent auction during the first half of the event to help raise some additional fund for Heroes.

Check-in will begin at 6:00, the first film will begin promptly at 7:00 and the event runs until 9:30. There will also be food available for purchase from our kitchen during the event. Please note, this is a BYOC (bring your own chair) event, so plan accordingly.

This event is brought to you with assistance from our friends at Fishing Tackle Unlimited.

Anthology Spring
Although it seems like we’ve been stuck in a vicious cycle of snowfall and single-digit temperatures, we at Tröegs Brewery are starting to “think spring.” We’re excited to report that we have begun distribution of our brand new Anthology Spring variety package! Beginning this year, we will offer four different Anthology variety packages to coincide with our current seasonal release. Anthology Spring features an assortment of some of our most popular brews including HopBack Amber, Tröegs Pale Ale, and DreamWeaver Wheat. Anthology Spring will also include our current seasonal release, the brand new Cultivator Helles Bock. We recently began shipment to wholesalers throughout our entire distribution footprint, so you can expect to see Anthology Spring in stores by the first week in March.

Full Moon Firkin
Our kitchen staff recently teamed up with our brewers to discuss something that’s always on our minds here at Tröegs: firkins! This meeting of the minds resulted in a veritable bucket list of ingredients that we’d like to infuse into a variety of our beers via firkin. So what better way to conduct this experimentation than with our monthly Full Moon Firkin event? Our Lead Cellar and firkin guru Tim Mayhew is working on a special Chai Tea version of HopBack Amber Ale for the next Full Moon Firkin event on Sunday, March 16. “This particular tea blend will impart hints of cardamom, ginger, anise, and allspice,” said Tim. “It should create a pumpkin-esque palate with a good amount of black pepper spiciness in the finish.” Tim also indicated that he’s in the process of steeping the HopBack with the tea blend now and the result is pretty stellar! Join us at the brewery on March 16 to sample this exotic version of HopBack. Tapping occurs at 11am when the first customer orders a pint. Subsequent tappings will take place as needed. Get here early and you could have the chance to tap the first firkin!

800-bbl Fermentation Tanks
In early October 2013, a boat carrying eight gargantuan 800-bbl fermentation tanks began its journey from Germany to Hershey, PA. About a month later, the precious cargo arrived at our brewery, and we’ve been working tirelessly to get these enormous tanks up and running. We anticipate the new fermenters to be on-line by the end of April. What does this mean, exactly? For starters, these tanks will allow us to increase our production steadily over the course of the next several years and get more beer into the hands of our thirsty customers. Although you may confuse them with huge grain silos found on a farm, these tanks hold A LOT of beer and will help us continue to meet the growing demand for popular beers such as Nugget Nectar, Mad Elf, and Perpetual IPA. The next time you visit us, take notice of the tanks peering out from the top of the brewery! Click HERE for a photo collage of our progress with the tanks over the last few months.

New Spring Snack Bar Menu Learn More
With several recent improvements to our kitchen now complete, our talented team of chefs is pleased to debut our new Snack Bar menu, which just went into effect on Monday, March 3. In addition to returning favorites such as grilled trio of cheese, Tröegswurst, and meatloaf on brioche, the revamped menu will feature some delicious brand new items such as vegan wild grain-polenta with local mushrooms, smoked salmon on house pupusa, and a new winter green salad with barbecued pecans, buttermilk ricotta, hay charred leeks, and sweet potato vinaigrette. Also, a few returning items will receive fresh updates, including our ever-popular pork belly small plate, confit duck leg, and our hand-rolled flatbread. Of course, we’ll still offer our shared charcuterie and cheese plates as well as favorites such as the Oktoberfest giant pretzel, Mad Elf fondue and our take on a popular Canadian delicacy, poutine with hand-cut fries, duck gravy, cheese curds and jalapeño-apricot ketchup. Also, don’t forget to check out our rotating chef’s selections including popcorn creations, house-made soups, small and large plate offerings, fresh oysters on the half shell, and desserts made from scratch. Finally, we will continue to offer our Sunday Brunch Special throughout the month of March. Bon appétit!
