Christmas or Appreciation party it’s your call

Smith’s Billiards on 12/6 had a party for their patrons with two new kegs tapped along with three taps that they wanted to finish off and food till they ran out, all for a small donation of a toy for tots or monetary contribution to one of tree charities. The Tavern Restaurant Westfield on Christmas Eve party with free buffet at 1pm and live music for their patrons where they promptly closed at 6pm to give their staff time off for the holiday. Now in another way, a couple of our other favorite places Kaptain Jimmy’s early in December and Opa Opa steakhouse now in January offered 50% on gift cards, that’s what I would call an appreciation toward their patrons.

Our First Ever Pub Crawl in The Woodlands
on Saturday, January 25

We have a full slate of Pub Crawls set up this year across our markets, and we’re excited to start off with our first ever in The Woodlands. As usual, we’re utilizing our “open house” schedule for the first four stops. This means that we’ll be signing tickets at all of the first four stops for four hours so people can split up between the establishments. You will get your ticket at whichever stop you decide to visit first. But, VERY IMPORTANT, we will only be handing out the tickets between 2:00 PM and 3:00 PM. Thus, you still need to start between 2:00 and 3:00.

Then, at 6:00 PM, everybody will gather at the final stop, and that’s where we will award the prizes. The prize for making all five stops will be an awesome Pub Crawl pint glass. We’ll have a large but limited supply. As always, designated drivers are both eligible for the award and encouraged to attend! So here is the layout:

The first four stops:

  • Hubbell & Hudson
  • The Refuge Bar & Bistro
  • Bar Louie
  • Baker St. Pub & Grill

And the final stop at 6:00 PM:

  • The Goose’s Acre

Valentines for Soldiers is now Valentines for Veterans
on Thursday, January 30 at the Brewery

For the past couple of years, we’ve hosted Valentines for Soldiers here at the brewery – a wonderful evening of eating, drinking and crafting valentines. This year, it’s Valentines for Veterans, but it’s the same wonderful evening.

We’re proud to partner with and raise funds for two incredible Houston area organizations, Team Red, White, & Blue and Expedition Balance. Both of these groups provide support and community for Houston area veterans as they make the difficult transition to civilian life.

Craft tables will be set up in our tour hall from 6:00 to 9:00 PM, so you can get creative and make valentines to send to veterans. There will be a bake sale with sweet and savory items from some of Houston’s best pastry chefs and home bakers. All of their proceeds will be donated.

A couple of great food trucks – H Town StrEATs and Fraiche Mobile Kitchen – will be outside as well, and they are generously donating 5% of their proceeds.

Tickets will be sold at the door for $10 each, and $5 from each ticket will go directly to our partner organizations.

Dogfish Head January 2014 Newsletter

Dogfish Head’s 2014 seasonal artist finds freedom in the weird
Jermaine Rogers never thought his art would take him very far, and for a while he was alright with that.

He was happy enough collecting a check from the Houston planetarium and drawing little flyers for bands on the side. It was the early ’90s, and music was changing. The Seattle sound was making its way to Texas, and Jermaine dug it. Club owners hired him to help promote up-and-comers like Soundgarden and The Melvins when they passed through town.

Sure, when he was younger, filling sketchbooks with Optimus Prime and coveting freshly sharpened pencils the way other kids coveted new toys, he dreamed of drawing for a living. But his teachers and other well-meaning adults had shut the door on that dream. The flyers and ‘zine covers kept him in touch with his creativity. Besides, he’d get tickets to the shows, maybe 50 bucks, and the chance to be part of something.

“I had no illusions that it would become anything huge,” he says. “It was just something that I wanted to do.”

Then Jermaine saw a poster by the artist Frank Kozik, and it was the beginning of what you might call his come-to-Jesus moment. READ THE FULL STORY.

MEET THE TEAM:
Dan Weber
What do you do?
I’ve been a brewer for 2 years and 3 months.
Best thing about Dogfish?
The culture. From managers of every department to people who just started here, everyone is here because they believe in what we’re doing and really enjoy what they do. Everyone has a good time and likes being around one another. It’s great.

Favorite Dogfish Head beer?
Being a brewer, I certainly can’t pick just one.
Burton Baton, Black & Blue, Aprihop and Noble Rot are definitely highlights. Also, I would love if we brought back Fort
.

If you could share a craft beer with anyone – past, present or future – who would it be?
I’d probably go with myself. Past Dan Weber would be able to learn a few things from present Dan Weber, and future Dan Weber could tell some great stories to present Dan Weber. Also, maybe he’d share a few things to gamble on so I could make some big money. It would be a blast.

Merch of the month: Caution Cap Tacker
Caution! Ageable Ales ahead! This metal wall tacker is all about showin’ love for our beers above 15% ABV. … But take it easy, the edges of this badass tacker can be a wee bit sharp, so be careful when unpacking.

Shoot a short film, win a trip to Dogfish Head
The Alamo Drafthouse and Dogfish Head Craft Brewery are pleased to announce an open call for short film entries for the seventh annual Off-Centered Film Fest. The short film competition is at the heart of each year’s OCFF, an epic multi-day celebration of craft beer, delicious food and cinema that takes place at the Alamo Drafthouse in Austin, Texas. This year’s fest will take place Thursday, April 24, through Saturday, April 26.
Each year’s filmmaking competition is centered around a theme. This year it’s “Off-Centered, Stuntin’,” a celebration of classic awe-inspiring feats in the spirit of iconic daredevils like Evel Knievel. Submissions open Jan. 31 and close March 1.
The grand prize includes $2,500 cash, “The Delaware Dogfish Experience” (a one-of-a-kind trip to Dogfish Head’s home base that includes two nights at the Dogfish Inn, a brewery tour, a kayak outing and more), and a Fantastic Fest Fan Badge for the 2014 fest in Austin, Texas.
For more about this year’s Off-Centered Film Fest and for submission guidelines, visit http://offcenteredfilmfest.com.

Events
The 2014 Weekend of Compelling Ales & Whatnot (#WOCAAW) is on the horizon! It’s three full days of off-centered ales – with many rare ones in the mix – Randall Jr. infusions, amazing beer-infused and beer-inspired foods, brewery tours (check out our new warehouse and bottling line), small-batch brewing demonstrations and hanging out with groovy Dogfish co-workers.

This year’s #WOCAAW will be going down March 7 to 9 at Dogfish Head Craft Brewery in Milton, Del., and Dogfish Head Brewings & Eats right down the road in Rehoboth Beach. If you’ve been before, you know this isn’t an event to miss.

New 2014 Seasonal Lineup Learn More
With the change in the calendar year come some pretty substantial alterations to our seasonal beer lineup, and we’re excited to give you a sneak peek of what’s ahead for 2014! Inspired by the cyclical nature of the four seasons, our “Hop Cycle” series celebrates the annual hop harvest. Emerging from springtime’s fertile ground, Cultivator (spring), celebrates the start of hop growing season. This spring bock delivers hints of toasted grains, fresh baked bread and delicate floral hops. Hop fans can rejoice knowing sunlight sustains the soil, allowing precious hop cones to grow and flourish. Sunshine Pils (summer) combines the snap of a Euro-style Pilsner with an assertive hop character to create a balanced, refreshing summer seasonal. With Hop Knife (fall), we recognize the meticulous, time-honored tradition of hand-harvesting hops at the peak of maturity. This harvest ale utilizes our hopback vessel and dry-hopping to release a bounty of intense hop flavor across the palate. As winter slowly creeps in, Blizzard of Hops (winter) confirms a successful harvest and the end of the hop cycle. Enjoy the fruits of our labor with this revitalizing Winter White IPA. With this change, we will also give our Anthology variety packaging an overhaul. Each Anthology package will coincide with our seasonal releases and include a sublime collection of your favorite Tröegs year-round brews.

Nugget Nectar Learn More
With Mad Elf now in full hibernation mode, it seems a fitting time to unleash our mid-winter limited release, Nugget Nectar. Hopheads will be excited to learn that we’re shipping Nugget Nectar region by region to get the freshest beer possible into the hands of our customers. We will release Nugget Nectar in our eight-county home market (along with the brewery Tasting Room and General Store) on January 6, and across Pennsylvania the week of January 20. Distribution will expand into New Jersey, Maryland and Delaware the first week of February, and then move into Ohio, Virginia, New York and Massachusetts in mid-February. With a heady collection of American hops, Nugget Nectar will rekindle your romance with the intense pucker your palate has come to expect from this bold Imperial Amber Ale. Drenched with a healthy dose of the freshest hops we’re able to source, Nugget Nectar is further intensified with additional whole flower Nugget cones added to our hopback vessel.  The result is an explosive hop experience that will deliver hopheads to nirvana!

Bourbon Barrel-Aged Troegenator
This month we will package Bourbon Barrel-Aged Troegenator! Initially released as Scratch #87, this barrel-aged version of our flagship Double Bock is dense, chewy, and captivating. After hibernating for six months in Heaven Hill bourbon barrels, Troegenator has emerged as a lush Double Bock with undertones of vanilla, oak, and toasted coconut amid a warm blanket of tangy bourbon notes. For this initial run, we will release Bourbon Barrel-Aged Troegenator in 750mL cork and cage bottles available at the brewery through the General Store for take-out as well as our Tasting Room for on-premise consumption. We plan to make this beer an annual limited release with availability in September and October at select beer retailers throughout our distribution footprint.

Full Moon Firkin
Our “Full Moon Firkin” series continues into 2014 with its first event scheduled to occur on Wednesday, January 15. Nugget Nectar will be available beginning at 11 a.m. Attributed to Native American folklore, the name “Wolf Moon” is derived from hungry wolf packs heard howling outside the natives’ villages during the full moon of January. In anticipation of the swarm of hopheads this Full Moon Firkin event is likely to attract, we feel it is only fitting to present one of our hoppiest beers that’s sure to leave you foaming at the mouth!

Meet beer author John Holl Learn More
Join us on Saturday, January 18 from 1 to 4 p.m. for a special meet and greet with author and craft beer personality John Holl when he visits Tröegs Brewery to talk about his new book, The American Craft Beer Cookbook. John is an editor of All About Beer Magazine and has written for the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Beverage World, and many other beer-related publications. He has judged beer competitions around the globe, regularly lectures on craft beer, and appears often on television discussing all things beer. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to have John personalize his book just for you! For more information about John and his book, please visit www.JohnHoll.com.
