Hey Badassbeer!

As we look forward to the holiday season with family and friends, we can’t help but think about what an important year 2013 has been for us. We kicked it off by brewing New Albion IPA with pioneer craft brewer Jack McAuliffe’s original recipe and yeast strain. We were honored to bring this classic brew back to life.

In the spring, Boston 26.2 Brew returned for the Boston Marathon for the second year. After the tragic events that happened at the Boston Marathon, we decided to donate all profits from Boston 26.2 Brew to The Greg Hill Foundation, which is committed to responding to the immediate needs of local families that have been touched by tragedy. As a sponsor of the Boston Marathon and more importantly, as a member of the Boston community, we wanted to do our part to help the city heal.

This year also brought the launch of the Sam Can, which is a unique design unlike any other beer can. One of the many benefits of the Sam Can is that we were able to take our beer to new heights – Boston Lager became available on Jet Blue flights this summer.

With the installment of our new Nano Brewery at the Boston Brewery, we’re continuing our commitment to developing innovative craft beers and are excited about the brews to come in 2014 and beyond.

Rebel IPA is coming!

As we head into 2014, we’re going to give you a sneak peek of one of our newest beers, Rebel IPA.

With this IPA we honor the rebellious American spirit that led to so many things we love today – starting with Samuel Adams, who led a rebellion for this country, to Jim Koch, who led a rebellion for craft beer.

For this brew we really wanted to showcase the wonderful citrusy and grapefruit character and subtle pine notes of American hops. To get the maximum expression of this for a West Coast IPA we used Simcoe, Cascade, Centennial, Chinook, and Amarillo, all from the Pacific Northwest.

Rebel IPA is currently available on draft in select markets, but will be launching nationally in early 2014. Sign up for Rebel Alerts to learn more and for updates on its availability near you.

Samuel Adams Utopias Seasoned Cigar

As we mentioned last month, we worked with Ted’s Cigars to develop the first ever craft beer-seasoned cigar. We’ve had some great feedback on the cigar and wanted to share some more information with you about it. Brewery Manager Jennifer Glanville had the opportunity to talk with Ted’s Cigars founder Ted Jackson about the cigar. You can find highlights from their conversation on the blog. If you are interested in trying it, you can purchase at Ted’s Cigars. Get them while you can – they’re only available until the end of December.

Ugly Sweater Run

We’ve had a lot of fun hosting the ugliest 5K on the planet! With more than 15 runs down across the country and more than 50,000 toys donated for Toys for Tots, we’re really getting into the holiday spirit.

The Ugly Sweater Run is a 3.1 mile race filled with holiday cheer and holiday beer. Want to join in on the fun? We still have some runs left! Visit the website to learn more and register for a race near you.

BTAD Spotlight: Pitch Room Winner

Congratulations to Daniel and Rebecca Dengrove of New York City based Brewla Bars for winning our National Pitch Room competition! Brewla Bars produces high quality frozen pops made with all natural ingredients that are craft brewed. The brother and sister team gave their best two minute pitch to our panel of judges including Jim Koch and key retailers and buyers at our Boston Brewery Pitch Room finals. They were awarded a $10,000 grant as well as extended coaching and mentorship from the Samuel Adams team.

In partnership with Accion, we hosted four regional Pitch Room competitions in San Francisco, Denver, Boston, and New York City. We’d like to thank all of the small businesses who participated in this year’s Pitch Room competition as well as those that attended our speed coaching events throughout the year. We’re looking forward to kicking off the 2014 events season!

Inspired by the classic flavors of gingerbread and intensifying their dark sweetness and warming spice, Merry Maker is the perfect brew to pair with holiday celebrations. This rich dark gingerbread stout entices you with the aromas of the holidays, hinting at the merriment and spices within. The flavor of gingerbread comes alive with the smooth sweetness and heartiness of dark roasted malts and a touch of wheat; however, it’s the intensity and spices of cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, and ginger that add a wicked kick to this jolly and playful brew.

Winter Lager Cookie

Preheat oven to 350°. Beat butter and sugar for 3 minutes, add molasses, and beat for 1 minute. Add the egg & beer, and beat for 30 seconds. Combine flour, salt, spices and baking soda. On lowest speed of mixer, beat in half of the flour mixture. Using a spoon, stir in remaining dry ingredients. Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface and divide into 2-3 portions; press each into a round, flattened disk and wrap well. Refrigerate for 1 hour. Roll dough to ¼ thickness and cut into Perfect Pint shapes. Transfer to parchment lined baking sheet & bake for 10-15 minutes, until edges are lightly browned.

Royal Icing (Optional): Place all ingredients in bowl and beat on medium high for 10 minutes. Icing will become thick and glossy. Spread over cookies immediately and enjoy!

  • ½ cup Samuel Adams Winter Lager
  • 3 cups flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 Tbsp ginger
  • 1 Tbsp cinnamon
  • 1 tsp orange powder
  • 2 Tbsp orange zest
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 2 sticks butter, softened
  • 1 cup firmly packed dark brown sugar
  • ½ cup molasses
  • 1 egg

  • Ingredients (Royal Icing):
  • 3 egg whites
  • 1 lb. confectioners’ sugar
  • ½ tsp white vinegar
  • ½ tsp orange extract or pure vanilla extract
