Sam Adams E-Mail Newsletter

Hey Badassbeer!

It is that time of year when we put down our OctoberFest steins and replace them with a pint of Winter Lager. Yep, that means it is getting colder; however, we found one of the best ways to stay warm is to break out the Ugly Sweater for our 5K tour across the country!

Another way we are staying warm and busy is brewing our favorite winter beers including Winter Lager and White Christmas Ale. We’re excited to share this year’s Winter Favorites Variety Pack with you too. We put a twist on an old favorite and also added a new brew that will make the holidays a little hoppier (more on that below).

We have a lot of great things to tell you about, including an update on our Brewing the American Dream Pitch Room competition and a special pairing for this year’s batch of Utopias.

Enjoy this month’s edition of What’s on Tap!

Samuel Adams
Utopias 2013 and the First Ever Craft Beer Seasoned Cigar

The finishing touches have just been placed on this year’s batch of Samuel Adams Utopias. If you haven’t heard of or had Utopias before, it’s a brew that challenges the notion of what a beer can be. It’s a blend of batches, some having been aged more than 20 years in a variety of woods in the Barrel Room at our Boston Brewery. This year, for the first time, we then blended it with a touch of our Kosmic Mother Funk® (KMF), a Belgian-style ale barrel-aged for at least nine months (and up to two years) in Hungarian oak tuns. For all the information on this year’s brew, visit our blog.

For those who are interested in enjoying a cigar from time-to-time, we also wanted to share a special partnership we worked on this year…the first ever craft beer-seasoned cigar. We worked with Ted’s Cigars to create a limited-edition, Utopias-seasoned cigar to be enjoyed on its own or as a pairing with the brew. The cigar features Utopias’ distinct subtle sweetness and rich notes of maple and vanilla along with a spicy complexity from the tobacco blend. You can purchase Ted’s Utopias-seasoned cigars at Ted’s Cigars during November and December.

Winter Favorites Variety Pack

‘Tis the season for the Winter Favorites Variety Pack! We’re excited to bring back some classics that have become a staple at holiday gatherings and also introduce you to a couple of new brews. This year’s Winter Favorites Variety Pack includes:

Samuel Adams Boston Lager: The backbone of the Samuel Adams family of breers, this complex and balanced lager is a great brew no matter what time of year it is.

Samuel Adams Winter Lager: A favorite winter tradition, Winter Lager is a dark wheat bock subtly spiced with fresh ground cinnamon, ginger and orange peel for a deep, smooth flavor and malty finish.

Samuel Adams Old Fezziwig Ale: The full body of this beer hits the palate with a depth of malt character, ranging from sweet toffee to dark sweet caramel. The complexity of the malt is supported by the warm notes of traditional holiday spices.

Samuel Adams White Christmas: This unfiltered white ale lightens up the holiday with a slight citrus note complemented by a blend of cinnamon, nutmeg, and orange peel.

Samuel Adams Cherry Chocolate Bock: For a new approach to a classic favorite, we added cherries to our traditional Chocolate Bock for a sweet, slightly tart note.

Samuel Adams Juniper IPA: Our newest release this season, Juniper IPA is a fresh winter IPA with piney flavors from juniper berries and citrus notes from American hops.

BTAD Spotlight: Finalists of the Pitch Room

Entrepreneurs in the food and beverage industry nationwide have been perfecting their two minute pitch to expert judges as part of our Pitch Room Competition. We’re offering the chance to win a $10,000 grant, extended coaching and mentorship from The Boston Beer Company, and an opportunity to pitch their product to key retailers and buyers.

In partnership with Accion, we’ve hosted four Pitch Room competitions in San Francisco, Denver, Boston, and New York City. We’re excited to announce our finalists who have been invited to compete in the Pitch Room finals on December 9th at our Boston Brewery:

Cole Meeker, owner of San Francisco based Sea of Change Trading Company

Lindita Torres-Winter, owner of Denver based Lindita’s Salsa

Michael Fairbrother of Londonderry, NH based Moonlight Meadery

Robin Cohen, owner of Arlington, MA based Doves and Figs

Daniel and Rebecca Dengrove, owners of New York based Brewla Bars

Catherine Oddenino and Ruthie Vishlitzky, owners of New York based Luca & Bosco

A special time of year calls for a special brew, White Christmas. For a change of pace from the hearty winter brews we wanted to combine the crispness of white ale with the warmth of familiar holiday spices. We began with a Belgian white ale but replaced the traditional coriander with the festive and warming holiday spices of cinnamon, nutmeg, and orange peel for a fun and flavorful brew that’s perfect for the season.

You can find White Christmas in 6-packs, 12-packs (in limited markets), and in our Winter Favorites Variety Pack.

In our opinion, there is no better Samuel Adams experience than the one you get here at the Boston Brewery. Come learn about our history, the brewing process and, of course, taste some of our award winning beers.

Winter Lager Bistro Chicken

by Chef Kevin Oringer

Heat olive oil in a large enameled cast-iron casserole pot. Season the chicken thighs with salt and pepper. Working in two batches, sear the chicken over moderately high heat until they are brown on both sides, about 10 minutes. Transfer the chicken thighs to a platter. Add the bacon, onions, carrots and garlic to the casserole pot. Sautee for 5 minutes until golden brown. Add thyme, cinnamon stick, star anise, Samuel Adams Winter Lager, mushrooms and chicken broth. Bring to boil and reduce to simmer. Return the chicken thighs to the casserole and cover. Let simmer for one hour. Increase the heat to moderate and cook uncovered until the sauce has reduced and thickened, about 20 minutes. Discard the thyme sprigs, cinnamon stick and star anise. Serve with rice or pasta.
