June Beer Updates

The brewhouse at Portsmouth Brewery is crazy busy, despite Head Brewer Tyler Jones’s paternity leave. He and his wife, Rachel, are the proud parents of little Noah Stephen, born on May 23.

We’re not sure how all of these beers will make it to the taps in one month, but we’re sure you’ll all give it your best effort!

NEW BEERS
: A ~7% British IPA: a tad darker and sweeter than our American IPAs and hopped with East Kent Goldings, Sonnet and Sovreign
– A Rosemary Rye Hefeweizen
– A
Strawberry Rhubarb Berliner Weiss
-A new ~4-5% American Pale Ale, featuring "tons of Bravo hops and dry-hopped with Calypso."

FAMILIAR FAVORITES
: ESB, Milk Stout, Mocha Milk Stout, Bottle Rocket, Wit, Witt, Retro Pale Ale (Peter’s recipe, circa 1991) and another batch of Bottle Rocket IPA.

Tyler has promised a new take on our annual 4th of July Red, White and Blue beers…stay tuned to our Brewers’ Notes blog for all the details.

Smuttynose has just published a release calendar that covers virtually everything for the rest of 2013. There are  a few Short Batches that we haven’t yet listed, as details are still being worked out. June kicks off with a bang!  Farmhouse Ale shipments began May 28 and a new Short Batch beer, Luna Moth, debuts at the brewery on June 7, during tours. A second Short Batch release on June 14 brings the return of Durty, but in a slightly stronger, tweaked version from the previous release. We scored hundreds of pounds of the popular yet hard-to-find Falconer’s Flight hop blend for dry-hopping.

We’re also excited to announce a collaboration brew taking place at Smutty on June 17. We’re still sorting a few details for a July release, but you’ll definitely know the brewery and you might have even had a version of the beer before. Info on new Smuttynose releases can be found on our Brewers Notes blog.

The Chef Has Left; Long Live The Chef

We are pleased to announce Jon Hebert as our new Executive Chef! Jon has been on our staff since 2005 when he began as a line cook and most recently spent several years as our Executive Sous Chef. From his career path, you can see Chef Jon is meticulous, patient and skilled. His food is also fantastic!

He replaces Todd Sweet who has left the Portsmouth Brewery to spend more time with his family and begin work towards his Master Chef certification. Chef Todd has done an amazing job in his five years and we thank him very much, not just for the Korean Beef Tacos, but for other great food and his acerbic wit. We certainly wish him well.

Since we’re just a week into the Hebert tenure, we don’t yet know what Chef Jon will bring to the menus, but we’re very excited to have him at the helm!

Bar Renovations begin June 2

In an effort to bring even more excellent beer to your glass, The Portsmouth Brewery is completely rebuilding and expanding our draft system! The upstairs bar will be expanded to offer two more draft beers and two cask-conditioned beers on brand-new beer engines. When the work is done, the LaPanza Lounge will also feature not only the same twelve drafts and two casks, but four more beers that are too limited to run through our main system. That’s 18 different offerings downstairs!

We’re doing our best to schedule the work around our business hours. Our doors will close at 10pm on Sunday, June 2 and work will immediately begin on the upstairs bar. We believe that transformation will be complete to open as usual Monday morning. If we don’t make that mark, then we’ll open the LaPanza Lounge on Monday and migrate back upstairs ASAP.  The downbar work will begin once the upstairs is done with everything finished up sometime Wednesday afternoon.

Your patience, which we appreciate, will be rewarded with beer, maybe even our keg of Firestone Walker Parabola

A/V Club Update

Whether you’re a visual or auditory learner, or you just like watching videos online, Smuttynose is pleased to present these shiny, new videos about our full-time beers. The clips feature authentic Smuttynose staff members sharing a mix of factual information, editorial content and food pairings. You might even learn the story behind your favorite label!

Shorter versions of the videos, which can be seen here, will also link to QR codes on our six packs, twelve packs and cases. Further videos for our seasonal releases are being edited and will be up soon.

Towle Farm Update

Construction is still clipping along nicely on the new Smuttynose headquarters at Towle Farm in Hampton, NH. The main brewery building (left) is now weather-tight. Utilities are being connected and we’ve got beehives.

You can read more (and see bigger pictures) on our blog.

A Final Thank You

Smuttynose and Portsmouth Brewery would like to thank Senator Jeanne Shaheen and Representative Ann E. Kuster for standing up for New Hampshire’s small brewers. Representative Kuster is co-sponsoring HR 494, which would reduce the excise tax rates for all of America’s small brewers, the first adjustment since 1976. Senator Shaheen is co-sponsoring S.917, the Senate version of the proposed new tax structure. This is one of few issues to gain sizeable support from both parties in DC and is viewed as pro-small business, pro-job and, of course, pro-beer. Both legislators have also joined their respective Small Brewers Caucuses   Read More >>

One of our favorite events of the year. Novare always seem to pull out kegs we assume no longer exist and tap them alongside other Short Batches, vintage Big Beers, and casks. Seacoast favorite,
WXGR, will be broadcasting live from the deck and you’ll see a lot of our staff there. 2013’s Smuttfest will also feature the debut of "Mar-GOSE-rita," a gose brewed with kaffir lime leaves in collaboration with In’finiti Fermentation and Distillation.

Label Costume Contest
Saturday, June 8
Dress like your favorite Smuttynose label while drinking Big A, Summer Weizen, Finestkind IPA and Robust Porter on tap at Bottle Bar East. Cash prizes and gift cards are up for grabs at this Philly Beer Week event.

Taste of the Nation
Wednesday, June 26
The Portsmouth Brewery will make a rare off-site appearance at the 20th annual fundraiser for Share Our Strength, an organization who seeks to end childhood hunger.  Seacoast restaurants, wine merchants and brewers will be at Strawbery Banke offering tastes and samples to attendees while a band plays on the dancefloor. This is one of the best downtown Portsmouth events, so get your tickets before it sells out!

Both breweries have event calendars on their websites where you can keep up-to-speed on all the goings-on.
