Dear Saint Arnold’s Army,

While the Texans won’t be playing this Sunday, you can still enjoy the big game with our official Saint Arnold Sue Pour Bole Party by Coupon Companion Plugin" href="" in_rurl="">Sponsorship Kit. This features a tasteful Saint Arnold static cling (free at the brewery) to affix to the corner of your TV screen to subliminally remind everybody to enjoy good beer during the game, a broad selection of Saint Arnold beers (available at your favorite neighborhood grocery or liquor store) to satisfy the subliminal urges, and Saint Arnold Root Beer for the kids and designated drivers so that everybody gets home safely. Also, upon recycling the six pack carriers at the brewery, everybody can have lovely Saint Arnold glassware to enjoy and further subliminally remind you to support your local brewery, even if it’s just water you are drinking out of the glass in the morning.

Saint Arnold Night at the Houston Rockets

You will need to purchase tickets via the link below in order to attend the preparty. It has to be sold together as a package since that’s how we’ll judge capacity at the brewery for the preparty.

Hey Badassbeer!

Happy New Year! We hope your 2013 is off to a great start with New Year’s resolutions still intact. January has been circled on our calendars for a few months now as it marks the release of New Albion Ale; the brew that many believe launched the craft beer movement. We brewed this special ale with its founder, Jack McAuliffe, last year and we’ve been anticipating its release ever since. This special limited release brew is currently rolling out nationally in 6-packs, so be sure you pick-up a piece of craft beer history.

Aside from New Albion Ale, we’ve been busy brewing a range of styles to include in our Spring Thaw variety pack (more on that below). While some may question its arrival time as we’re still in the midst of winter, rest assured that whether you’re hitting the slopes, somewhere south enjoying the milder climate, or simply waiting for longer days and warmer weather, we’re confident that Alpine Spring and Spring Thaw will pair perfectly with this time of year.

Enjoy this month’s What’s on Tap and join me in hoisting an Alpine Spring as we look ahead to warmer temperatures!

Cheers! - Andrew & Bert, 2011

New Year, New Brews

Mass Brewers Fest

As we turn the page on another year of brewing, we’re excited to hit the ground running in 2013. Last month in the December newsletter, we announced this year’s spring variety pack will include Boston Lager, Alpine Spring, Irish Red, and a few new styles including Maple Pecan Porter (available exclusively in this pack) and two more new year-round styles, Double Agent IPL and White Lantern!

Our brewers have given the IPA a new identity, creating an India Pale Lager (IPL) – Double Agent IPL. Double Agent hits your palate with a citrusy hop character from the Citra and Cascade hops, and notes of grapefruit and orange with a hint of sweetness from Zeus hops. To round out this citrus character we also used some Nelson Sauvin hops from New Zealand. The final result is a boldly hoppy and flavorful brew but with an unconventionally crisp and smooth lager finish.

With a combination of tangy citrus sweetness and a hint of peppery spice, White Lantern is perfect brew for white ale lovers. Enriched with a crisp wheat character, this hazy white ale gives you a refreshing brew that’s has just the right balance of citrus and spices (including Grains of Paradise and coriander).

Since 2008, Samuel Adams Brewing the American Dream has been providing food, beverage, and hospitality small business owners as well as craft brewers with the essential ingredients to start, strengthen and grow their businesses. Together with our partner Accion, the country’s leading non-profit microlender, we provide loans, coaching and access to networks that help small businesses succeed.

This month, we shine the spotlight on a recent recipient: Strawberry Hill Confectionary in Everett, MA.

Henry Zunino used his years of candy industry experience and artistic talent to launch his own candy company using only organic products, free from dangerous chemicals. Boston Lager Infused
Pizza Crust

Mass Brewers Fest

What’s better than a great beer and delicious pizza? Cooking a pizza by incorporating a great beer! To help us create a recipe, we turned to our good friend, Pizza Chef Mark Bello of Pizza a Casa Pizza School (Link to: in New York City, who made an amazing pizza dough that’s infused with our Boston Lager. Get the recipe below and be sure to tweet us a photo of the finished pie!

Samuel Adams Boston Lager® Infused Pizza Dough

  • Makes: Two crusts to be dressed and baked on a cookie sheet, pizza pan, or screen. For a thicker crust, stretch to 12". For a thinner crust, stretch to 14"
  • Prep time: 15 minutes
  • Rise time: Between 1-2 hours in a warm spot (about 70°F-80°F)
  • 10-15 minutes depending on your oven, toppings and desired doneness
  • Preheat: Oven to 500°F

  • Ingredients:
  • Approx. 3½ cups (20 oz.) unbleached all-purpose flour plus more for dusting
  • 1 packet instant yeast aka: highly active or bread machine yeast
  • 1 Tablespoon finely granulated salt
  • 1 Tablespoon extra virgin olive oil plus more for your rising container, cookie sheet, pizza pan or screen
  • 12oz. bottle of Samuel Adams Boston Lager® warmed up to 120°F-130°F

Warm the beer to 120°F-130°F (warming the beer properly means your yeast will activate properly). Warm the (open) bottle in a bowl of very warm (not boiling water) or by running it under hot water from the tap. A thermometer insures success – if you don’t have one handy, the beer should feel very warm (not too hot) to the touch. In a 5 quart or larger bowl, combine flour, yeast, salt and oil. Add beer to flour mixture, and stir with a fork (not stirring with your hands just yet – it’s too sticky at first) until the dough is lumpy. Then, go in with your hands. The dough will still be a little sticky, so gradually add flour as you knead to the point that the finished dough should be just slightly tacky and elastic. To tell when the dough is done, periodically poke it and when the dough gently springs back, it’s done. Don’t worry if it’s not perfectly smooth – don’t over knead it! Kneading: press down, push, fold, repeat. Your finished dough, will weigh right around 2 pounds (30-34 oz.). Break into two equal pieces – use a scale or eyeball it. Create a ball of each piece and place them in separate airtight containers lightly greased with olive oil. Each container needs to be at least a quart in size to allow for the dough to double in size (deli quart containers work great for this). Set dough aside to rise in a warm location, about 70°F-80F is good. After dough has expanded/up to doubling in size (about 1-2 hours), gently remove from container and stretch to fit on a lightly greased 12" or 14" cookie sheet, pizza pan or screen. Dress to your liking and bake in a 500°F preheated oven until your crust and toppings are to your desired doneness (about 10 to 15 minutes). Out of the oven, allow a few minutes to cool. Then cut, serve and enjoy.

Beer of the Month
Samuel Adams Featured Beer

A distinct citrus and subtle piney hop character.

Jack McAuliffe paved the way for the American craft beer revolution when he first brewed New Albion Ale in 1976. Brewed solely with American Cascade hops, this golden American Pale Ale has a distinct citrus and subtle piney hop character. This month we’re proud to rerelease 6-packs of New Albion Ale in honor of Jack’s pioneering spirit and his contributions to the craft beer community.

Using the original recipe from almost 40 years ago, right down to the original yeast strain, we came together with Jack last summer to brew a batch of this special ale. Watch the video from that brew day by clicking here.

Wednesday night out at Smith’s Billiards

My Wednesday night out would take me to Smith’s Billiards because they were pouring two brews I had to have! The first was Lukcy Basartd from Stone Brewing it’s a blend of their Arrogant Bastard and Double Arrogant Bastard and oak aged Arrogant Bastard. It was everything I thought it would be and more seeing I’m a big fan of the Arrogant Bastard. Next was Sierra Nevada Narwhal Imperial Stout which I love Russian stout and this one was great and I was on the lookout for Otter Creek from Vermont they make an excellent one also. The crowd there was about average and Thai was great to me because the stout had got real foamy and he poured a second glass so I got almost two for the price of one!

Stone Brewing

Lukcy Basartd pours brown with good head and lots of sticky lacing. Nose of oak along with malt/earthy and pine aroma. Taste is mouth biting at the get go with an after oak and citrus flavor. Another Badassbeer! Served in 14oz goblet at 8.5% at Smith’s billiards for $6.00 on 1/16/13.

Sierra Nevada Brewing

Narwhal Russian Imperial Stout pours black with Hugh head of you let it and sliding lacing. Nose of rich dark malt and a slight earthy note. Taste is also rich with dark roast malt along with a small alcohol flavor to it like a fine brandy. Another Badassbeer! Served in 10 oz goblet 10.2% at Smith’s billiards for $4.00 on. 1/16/13.

Pucker Up with Nugget Nectar

Learn More
With The Mad Elf entering hibernation mode, now seems a fitting time to unleash our revered mid-winter seasonal, Nugget Nectar. With a heady collection of American hops, Nugget Nectar will rekindle your romance with the succulent humulus lupulus overload you’ve come to expect from this bold Imperial Amber Ale. “Nugget Nectar was inspired by fresh new hops rolling in from the harvest,” said John Trogner. Nugget Nectar is intensified with whole flower Nugget cones added to our hopback vessel and dry-hopped with our patented HopsCyclone™ technique.  Keeping freshness in mind, we are shipping Nugget Nectar as fast as it is packaged. You can expect cases, six-packs, and bombers to start appearing in Central Pennsylvania in mid-January and expanding through our eight-state distribution area over the following four weeks. Draft Nugget Nectar will be released in mid-February and into early March.
PIPA in Perpetuity Learn More
After what appeared to be an unfortunate hop shortage, we are pleased to announce that Perpetual IPA is now flowing at retailers and our own General Store. Due to the overwhelming demand of our newest year-round beer (and thanks to the abundance of Citra hops from this year’s yield), we’re increasing production to ensure all you hopheads that Perpetual IPA is poised to flow indefinitely. Thanks for making this beer fly off the shelves!
Full Moon Firkin
The date and approximate time of a specific full moon can be calculated from the following equation:

d = 20.362955 + 29.530588861 x N + 102.026 x 10–12 x N2

For those of you who are mathematically challenged, our “Full Moon Firkin” series continues into 2013 with its first event scheduled to occur on Saturday, January 26. We will tap firkins of Nugget Nectar and Perpetual IPA for a special side-by-side tasting beginning at 3 p.m. Attributed to Native American folklore, the name “Wolf Moon” is derived from hungry wolf packs heard howling outside the natives’ villages during January’s full moon. In anticipation of the throngs of hopheads this event is likely to attract, we feel it is rather fitting to offer up this dog-eat-dog throwdown between two of our hoppiest contenders that will leave you foaming at the mouth!
