Hello and an early Happy Thanksgiving! This month edition of What’s On Tap is loaded with flavor between beer, recipes, and pairing suggestions.
We start though with a heartfelt note to anyone affected by Hurricane Sandy. We’ve always known that little things can make a big difference in the taste of our beers, so in that same spirit we’ve got a series of activities going on here at the brewery to help raise money and gather supplies to help in the relief effort. We know we can’t fix everything, but we believe that the sum of many small actions can make a big impact. So if you’re reading this and were not affected, we encourage you to join in the relief efforts. One way you can add your support is to come on down to the Boston Brewery, take a tour and leave a donation. All donations from now until the end of the year will go to the relief efforts. To those who’ve already contributed through donations of money, food, clothing, or time we raise a glass to you this Thanksgiving holiday.
Even though the news coverage wanes, the needs persist. The Red Cross and other charitable organizations need our continued support.
Turning our attention to the brewing front, we remain busy shipping out this year’s Winter Classics mix packs with the staple brews you’ve come to enjoy during the holiday season. A Boston Lager by the fire or a Chocolate Bock after a hearty meal? Don’t mind if we do.
So grab your favorite Sam style and enjoy this month’s What’s On Tap.
TRY IT AT HOME:
CRAFT BEER VS. RED WINE
More and more, drinkers are appreciating craft beer in the same way they would a fine wine (i.e. smelling, tasting, proper pouring and glassware). They’re even expanding their options to include full-flavored craft beers as an alternative to red wine – in cooking, food pairings and gifting. Craft beers are brewed with the finest quality ingredients, yet can be more accessible and approachable than red wine, making them a great pairing for many foods.
To have a little fun comparing craft beer and red wine, we’ve created a tasting experience for you to try at home. With Thanksgiving coming up, what better time to see if both of these favorites have a place at the table.

NEWS FROM SAMUEL ADAMS BREWING THE AMERICAN DREAM
We’d like to welcome the newest member of the Brewing the American Dream program, Mindy’s Catering! Since purchasing Mindy’s Catering in 2000, co-owners Erin White and Fredy A. Robles have continued to operate as a family-owned, full-service catering business serving Washington, D.C. As part of a recent effort to improve their business, they decided they needed funding in order to buy their own equipment. Through the Samuel Adams Brewing the American Dream program and their existing relationship with The LEDC, they received a loan that will help them purchase equipment and other supplies – saving them approximately $25,000 per year in rental costs – and invest in additional promotional materials to market and grow their catering business.

COOKING WITH SAM:
Beer… it’s not just for drinking during the Thanksgiving Day football games anymore. Here are a few seasonal dishes to help put your Winter Classics variety pack to work in the kitchen this holiday season. Need help finding Winter Classics in your area? Head over to our Find a Sam page.
Holiday Porter Beer Soup
- 3/4 cup of Samuel Adams® Holiday Porter
- 4 cups chicken stock
- 1/4 cup garlic infused olive oil
- 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups of grated extra-sharp Cheddar
- Salt and black pepper
Heat the olive oil in a saucepan over medium heat. Whisk in the all-purpose flour and cook until the mixture starts to bubble (roughly 3-4 minutes). Whisk in the chicken stock and bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to a simmer. Slowly drop in the cheese while stirring until fully melted and smooth. Add Holiday Porter and cook until heated through. Add salt and pepper, to taste. Cooks roughly 4 to 6 servings.
Looking for a unique side to serve with your turkey? We recommend a roasted turkey with Old Fezziwig bread pudding.
And to finish up a big meal, here’s a lighter dessert option that incorporates our favorite Boston Lager called Adams Apple.
