Bishop’s Barrel No. 1 Released on Monday, November 5

Great beer + barrel = deliciousness

This is the complicated formula that we are following as we fill our secret barrel room with different beers in different types of barrels. We have christened these beers the Bishop’s Barrel series.

We filled our first barrel in 2005, really for our own enjoyment but also for our St. Patrick’s Day Party in 2006. Since then, we have filled a barrel here and there. At the end of last year, we began our barrel program in earnest and now have a wonderful smelling room with over 200 barrels in it.

The problem with barrel aging beers is it takes a long time (from several months to years), it’s expensive and at the end, you don’t have a lot of beer. But we feel the effort and expense is all worth the final result, even if there isn’t a lot to go around.

We will be offering the Bishop’s Barrel only in 12 ounce bottles and only to pubs and restaurants. There just isn’t enough to contemplate going into liquor and grocery stores. Consider this: a Bishop’s Barrel release will probably be on average less than 20% of the volume of a Divine Reserve release. Now think of how hard it is to get Divine Reserve. Thus, we thought that we could accomplish spreading the beer around more effectively by having it available only at on premise accounts.

Bishop’s Barrel No. 1 is an Imperial Stout aged in 48 Woodford Reserve bourbon barrels for ten months. The nose is all bourbon and chocolate. The taste starts with a mix of spice with the bourbon and chocolate emerging and lingering through the finish. The light carbonation keeps the beer from becoming cloying, almost giving it a perception of lightness. A pleasant sipping beer, the bourbon is both present but not overpowering as you work your way through the glass. This beer should be served at 55°F or a couple degrees warmer. Christmas Ale Pub Crawl – North Village Edition – Saturday, November 10

This is the 18th annual Christmas Ale Pub Crawl – the one that started them all.

This will be our North Village Pub Crawl with five stops. We are utilizing our "open house" schedule for the first four stops. This means that we will be signing tickets at all four of the first four stops for three and a half hours so people can split up between the establishments. You will get your ticket at whichever stop you decide to visit first. But, VERY IMPORTANT, we will only be handing out the tickets between 2:30 PM and 3:30 PM. Thus, you still need to start between 2:30 and 3:30. Then, at 6:00 PM, everybody will gather at one final stop, and that is where we will award the glasses. The prize for making all five stops will be our new Saint Arnold Christmas Ale pint glass. We will have a large but limited supply. And as always, designated drivers are both eligible for the award and encouraged to attend! So here is the layout and our vague directions:

The first four locations (at which we will be simultaneously between 2:30 PM and 3:30 PM):

  • One will be somewhere on Dunstan between Kelvin and Morningside. Sounds like a Scottish pub.
  • One will be on Kirby between Robinhood and Quemby. Think of New Orleans nicknames.
  • One will be on Quemby between Kirby and Kelvin. Half of Hans and Franz.
  • One will be on Bissonnet between Greenbriar and Morningside. Has a Texas table inside. ‘K?

At 6:00 PM, we will proceed from these four locations up Morningside to Bissonnet and look for someplace to congregate! There will be bratwurst with sauerkraut available here as well. Think: hot lava.

Remember to bring cash, meet new people, and be seen with a Saint Arnold in your hand.

FOAMRAISER 2012 at The Orange Show on Saturday, November 10

Here are the important things:

  • The Orange Show Monument is a cool place to explore, especially with a beer in hand.
  • This is a fundraiser for a great Houston institution.
  • The Orange Show puts on the Art Car Parade.
  • There will be a cask of DR12.
  • Music will be from Thunderado and Mad Maude and the Hatters.
  • Admission includes a special pint glass.
  • Now buy your ticket. Not everybody will be pub crawling.

Saint Arnold is Hiring an Executive Chef

We are seeking an executive chef for our soon-to-open restaurant and in-house catering operation. Candidate should have at least three years of previous restaurant experience at the sous-chef level or above in fine dining restaurants or hotels. Banquet work is a plus.

Our candidate must have excellent social skills, be highly organized, detail-oriented and passionate about creating great food. Customer contact is an important part of the job, as is a genuine interest and enthusiasm for Saint Arnold beer and the food that complements it.

Duties include food preparation, supervising and training the kitchen personnel, scheduling, maintaining good food and labor costs, purchasing, inventory, receiving, quality and portion control, menu development, and pricing.

Dia De Los Muertos Party at El Gran Malo
on Saturday, November 3

El Gran Malo is having a big bad Dia de los Muertos party. Santo – the perfect Dia De Los Muertos beer – will be featured all day long, and they’ll also be tapping a cask of Divine Reserve 12 at 6:00 PM. There will be a giant, traditional shrine outside, deathly crafts, a Mariachi, a roasted pig and more!
