NOVEMBER BREW-NEWS

Happy November Shipyard Ale Society!

We are kicking November off with a bang here in Portland starting with the Maine Brewers Festival this Saturday followed by a full week dedicated to Maine Beer. Shipyard will be featured throughout the town, so check out the event list below and join us for a pint!

Meanwhile, the Shipyard brew-crew is still brewing at full tilt to get our must have winter-warmer, Prelude Special Ale, on shelves in select markets by mid-November.

Don’t worry Pumpkinhead fans, your fall favorite is not leaving you for another year just yet. Pumpkinhead will remain on shelves through Thanksgiving, while supplies last.

Saint Arnold Army Newsletter

Dear Saint Arnold’s Army:

Bishop’s Barrel No. 1 Released on Monday, November 5

Great beer + barrel = deliciousness

This is the complicated formula that we are following as we fill our secret barrel room with different beers in different types of barrels. We have christened these beers the Bishop’s Barrel series.

We filled our first barrel in 2005, really for our own enjoyment but also for our St. Patrick’s Day Party in 2006. Since then, we have filled a barrel here and there. At the end of last year, we began our barrel program in earnest and now have a wonderful smelling room with over 200 barrels in it.

The problem with barrel aging beers is it takes a long time (from several months to years), it’s expensive and at the end, you don’t have a lot of beer. But we feel the effort and expense is all worth the final result, even if there isn’t a lot to go around.

We will be offering the Bishop’s Barrel only in 12 ounce bottles and only to pubs and restaurants. There just isn’t enough to contemplate going into liquor and grocery stores. Consider this: a Bishop’s Barrel release will probably be on average less than 20% of the volume of a Divine Reserve release. Now think of how hard it is to get Divine Reserve. Thus, we thought that we could accomplish spreading the beer around more effectively by having it available only at on premise accounts.

Bishop’s Barrel No. 1 is an Imperial Stout aged in 48 Woodford Reserve bourbon barrels for ten months. The nose is all bourbon and chocolate. The taste starts with a mix of spice with the bourbon and chocolate emerging and lingering through the finish. The light carbonation keeps the beer from becoming cloying, almost giving it a perception of lightness. A pleasant sipping beer, the bourbon is both present but not overpowering as you work your way through the glass. This beer should be served at 55°F or a couple degrees warmer. For more details on this beer, go to saintarnold.com/bb.

While this beer can be aged in the bottle, it has been aging in the barrels and is ready to enjoy now.

By the way, we are offering the empty barrels for sale for $50 each. They make lovely tables, planters, or you can put your own beverage in there. If interested, please contact kathy@saintarnold.com.

Christmas Ale Pub Crawl – North Village Edition – Saturday, November 10

This is the 18th annual Christmas Ale Pub Crawl – the one that started them all.

This will be our North Village Pub Crawl with five stops. We are utilizing our "open house" schedule for the first four stops. This means that we will be signing tickets at all four of the first four stops for three and a half hours so people can split up between the establishments. You will get your ticket at whichever stop you decide to visit first. But, VERY IMPORTANT, we will only be handing out the tickets between 2:30 PM and 3:30 PM. Thus, you still need to start between 2:30 and 3:30. Then, at 6:00 PM, everybody will gather at one final stop, and that is where we will award the glasses. The prize for making all five stops will be our new Saint Arnold Christmas Ale pint glass. We will have a large but limited supply. And as always, designated drivers are both eligible for the award and encouraged to attend! So here is the layout and our vague directions:

The first four locations (at which we will be simultaneously between 2:30 PM and 3:30 PM):

  • One will be somewhere on Dunstan between Kelvin and Morningside. Sounds like a Scottish pub.
  • One will be on Kirby between Robinhood and Quemby. Think of New Orleans nicknames.
  • One will be on Quemby between Kirby and Kelvin. Half of Hans and Franz.
  • One will be on Bissonnet between Greenbriar and Morningside. Has a Texas table inside. ‘K?

At 6:00 PM, we will proceed from these four locations up Morningside to Bissonnet and look for someplace to congregate! There will be bratwurst with sauerkraut available here as well. Think: hot lava.

Remember to bring cash, meet new people, and be seen with a Saint Arnold in your hand.

If you like the limited edition 11×17 handprinted Carlos Hernandez pub crawl poster, you can order it here for $10 (regularly $15), and we’ll bring it to you at the final stop of the pub crawl.

This is the North Village Pub Crawl. There will also be a South Village Pub Crawl on December 8, so mark your calendars for that one as well.

If you haven’t heard the news by now, we are pleased to announce that Tröegs fared quite well at the 2012 Great American Beer Festival (GABF) in Denver, CO on October 13. In addition to hauling back three gold medals for our year-round beers HopBack Amber and DreamWeaver Wheat, as well as our seasonal Sunshine Pils, we also captured the Mid-Size Brewing Company of the Year award. Thar’s gold in them thar beers!

Elf Season is in full swing! Learn More
Mad Elf Ale made its 2012 debut on October 15 when bottles hit the streets. But wait! The frenzy and excitement stirred by the Elf will continue into November as it hits draft lines all across our distribution footprint. Expect Mad Elf to start popping up on draft Thanksgiving week. Don’t forget to pick up a six-pack, case, or 101-oz. gift pack at your local distributor or the Tröegs Brewery General Store… because once it’s gone, you’ll have to wait until next season to get some!
Speaking of our holiday ale, Mad Elf recently got a cheesy makeover when we unveiled our new seasonal Snack Bar menu in September. One item that stands out as a festive holiday treat is our Mad Elf Fondue. Featuring eight ounces of delectable cheese sauce made with white cheddar, heavy cream, milk, flour, and (of course) Mad Elf, we bake this creamy concoction until it is golden brown and then serve with crusty baguette pieces and sliced apples for dipping. Stop by the Snack Bar and try some!

Scratch Beer Update Learn More
Pumpkin Ale – After a slight delay due to Hurricane Sandy, our much-anticipated Scratch #79 – Pumpkin Ale was just released today. Dubbed “Master of Pumpkins,” Scratch #79 is only available on draft in our Tasting Room, so be sure to stop in and get some before it vanishes into the night. And yes, we will fill growlers.
Belgian Brown Abbey Ale – To celebrate Chris Trogner’s first wedding anniversary, we’ve returned to his favorite beer style – Belgian Brown Abbey Ale. Scratch #80 will hit draft lines in the Tasting Room very soon. Also, we will have a limited number of cases for sale in our General Store.

Full Moon Firkin Learn More
Join us in the Tasting Room TONIGHT (10/31) at 5 p.m. for the third installment of our “Full Moon Firkin” event as we celebrate Halloween with the release of our first-ever Pumpkin Ale by filling up giant pumpkins from Strites’ Orchard and tapping them like firkins. Also, don’t forget to mark your calendar for November’s event on Wednesday 11/28. Sometimes referred to as “The Frosty Moon,” we will tap a firkin of JavaHead Stout to warm your soul and prepare for the transition into winter. Stay tuned for more details as the event gets closer.

Tröegs Holiday Gift Ideas Learn More
The release of Mad Elf means the holiday season is right around the corner, so be sure check out some great holiday gift ideas for the beer geek in your life. In addition to brand new Mad Elf Christmas tree ornaments arriving later this week, we also have Mad Elf soap and newly designed Mad Elf T-shirts for men and women. We will also have Tröegs iPhone decals available in the coming weeks. Stop by our General Store at the brewery or shop our on-line Tröegs Gift Shop.
