Hey Badassbeers!

Happy September! There is a lot of excitement around the Brewery as we get knee deep into the fall season. We’ve been brewing around the clock in anticipation of four large OctoberFest celebrations happening this weekend in Boston, Cincinnati, Denver and Chicago. We had to brew a bunch more OctoberFest to try and set a world record in stein hoisting (more on that below). Not to worry, we still found time to brew Boston Lager, Harvest Pumpkin and the rest of your favorites.

Speaking of OctoberFest (the beer), what’s this about an OctoberFest milkshake? Turns out a restaurant has taken our fall brew and created a beer-infused milkshake. An innovative dessert to follow the classic fall food pairing of OctoberFest and brats!

We hope you will all join in for this weekend’s Hoist Heard ‘Round the World attempt. In the meantime enjoy this month’s edition of What’s on Tap!

Cheers!

TAKE A HOP TOUR

Mass Brewers Fest

For the first time together in a 6-pack, we’re excited to release Samuel Adams® Latitude 48 IPA, Samuel Adams® Whitewater IPA, and Samuel Adams® Noble Pils in our newest variety pack: Samuel Adams® Hop Tour™. These three styles are brewed with hops from different growing regions around the world, including Germany, Czech Republic, United Kingdom, Australia and right here in the United States. In total, 13 different hop varieties went into brewing these three beers.

STEIN HOISTING COMPETITION
IN FULL SWING

Mass Brewers Fest

In addition to the Hoist Heard ‘Round the World, we’ve had a few thousand Sam drinkers from all over the country compete in our Stein Hoisting Competition. The top men’s and women’s times stand at over 16 and 20 minutes, respectively. However, the big question still remains…how long could YOU hoist a five pound stein? Stein Hoisting events are happening coast to coast in our attempt to find the 2012 Samuel Adams National Stein Hoisting Champion. The winners will receive a trip for two to the 2013 Oktoberfest Celebration in Munich, Germany!

COOKING WITH SAM:
BOSTON LAGER BBQ SAUCE

Mass Brewers Fest

The fall season can be a great time of the year to experiment with BBQ sauces. You can create wings for the game, pull out the crock pot for a pork shoulder or even take it up a notch with a smoker. Whatever your cooking preference, our chef partner David Burke has a unique and simple BBQ sauce recipe that incorporates our favorite brew, Boston Lager.

Samuel Adams Boston Lager® BBQ Sauce

  • Ingredients:
  • 1 bottle Boston Lager
  • ¼ cup vegetable oil
  • ½ onion, chopped
  • ½ cup chopped garlic
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • 1 tsp red pepper flakes
  • ¼ cup dark brown sugar
  • ¾ cup red wine vinegar
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 2 Tbsp salt
  • 2 Tbsp black pepper
  • ¼ cup tomato paste

In a large sauce pan, heat all ingredients, stir and cover. Reduce by half, and simmer over low heat for 2 to 3 hours, stirring occasionally. Strain and serve with your favorite cut of meat.

Beer of the Month
Samuel Adams Featured Beer

A distinct roasted character with traditional pumpkin pie spices.

An up and coming fall favorite, Harvest Pumpkin Ale is brewed with over 17 pounds of real pumpkin per barrel which adds full body and sweetness to this dark reddish amber brew. Deep roasted malts, including smoked malt, lend a distinct roasted character while traditional pumpkin pie spices give this beer a subtle spice note that warms you up as the temperatures begin to drop.

While pumpkin ales have been cropping up more from craft brewers over the past few years, this style is actually one of the oldest to originate in America. Early colonists lacked some of the classic beer ingredients, so in place of malt, other fermentable sugars such as molasses, squash, or pumpkin were used. The style wasn’t well received at first because the pumpkin was used for its sugar alone rather than its flavor. Not until recently have pumpkins been used in addition to malt and other spices to create flavorful pumpkin ales. For our take on the style we’ve used a large portion of real pumpkin to give it a smooth richness and flavor.

To try our Harvest Pumpkin Ale, look for it in 6-packs and in our Harvest Collection Variety Pack. To find a location visit our Find a Sam page.
