It was a two for weekend with the Badassbeerwife. Saturday night was Smith’s Billiards to see what was pouring and have something to eat there for the first time. We found out that you order up from Theodore’s which is right below them and we had a nice rack of ribs with our brews. Which were a Southern Tier Choklat, the chocolate really stood out here and it was just heavenly. The Peak organic Spring Simcoe was more on the side of a session beer where it wasn’t overbearing but wet and also delicious. The better half enjoyed Allagash White.
Now on Sunday for lunch we checked out Amherst Brewing at their new location 10 University Drive not far from UMass Amherst. I will miss the old but the new is great, with plenty of room that has a good openness to it! Our waitress was a sweet little thing and her name was Sam and she took care of all our needs. The food here was also great. The better half had a cob salad “chef’s salad” and I went with a grilled bratwurst sandwich. On to the brews, first was Two Sisters Imperial Stout next Black Dog IPA, and I finished up with their Cascade IPA, all of them were excellent. The better half enjoyed BBC Holidale 2010, and Cask Fruited Ryeteous 4 Ways.
My write ups on the brews I had at these great establishments.
Southern Tier Choklat pours deep black with good head and following lacing. Nose of dark chocolate with maybe an alcohol note? Taste is big and chocolaty with heavy malt flavors. 11.0% Smith’s Billiards 2/25/12
Peak Organic Spring Simcoe pours golden with short head and lots of lacing. Nose of citrus with some earthy note “pine?” Taste is wet a first then overwhelming with top of tongue hop bite and nice pungent after mouth. 6.0% Smith’s Billiards 2/25/12.
2 Sisters Stout pours black with good head and good lacing. Nose is of dark malt and coffee, almost like espresso. Taste is smooth as it should for an Imperial, with chocolate and coffee notes. 6.7% at brewery 2/26/12.
Black Dog IPA pours black with short head and melting lacing. Nose is fairly clean with some espresso and earthy notes. Taste is porter ‘ish with nice mouth bite from the hops! 5.0% at brewery 2/26/12.
Cascade IPA pours hazy amber with little head and some lacing. Nose is all grapefruit "all citrus". Taste wet and dry at same time with a subtle hop mouth. Great session brew for year round. 5.3% at brewery 2/26/12.
